For those that haven't seen...Tengai Makyou Ziria has had an English Translation released

This is a complete English translation of Tengai Makyou: Ziria for the PC-Engine CD-ROM² system.

I'm very keen to try this one out, but doing my usual thing of trying to pick up an unpatched copy for collection purposes, I'm coming up blank trying to find one with an obi. I'm aware it's one of the earlier CD-ROM games, but does it predate games on the format coming with a spine card? I'm asking here as I figure someone here is bound to know

It does mate, it's a gold colour.

          Cheers - the search continues!

              Oh, what he said.

I'm pretty sure all CD rom games (2 / SCD / ACD), aside from promos / pack ins (boxsets really), came with spines.

They did as far as I'm aware. I have a few and they all have spines.

Old Secrets revealed. Boot backups... (and i assume other region game?)

any PS1 system, any region of Alien Resurrection, something to block the tray eject sensor.

                  Steps:
                  1. boot Alien Resurrection with tray open
                  2. in the main menu, go to the options menu
                  3. input this cheat code to unlock the cheat menu: CIRCLE, DPAD L, DPAD R, CIRCLE, DPAD U, R2
                  4. go back to the options menu
                  5. input this cheat code to unlock stage select: R1, DPAD D, R1, DPAD R, L1, DPAD U, L2, SQUARE
                  6. go back to the options menu
                  7. input this cheat code to enable disc-swap: DPAD L, DPAD U, DPAD R, DPAD D, DPAD R, DPAD U, DPAD L, SQUARE, TRIANGLE, SQUARE, TRIANGLE, L1
                  8. go to cheat menu
                  9. select LEVEL 6, SECTION 1, and then, while holding L1 (do not let go until told to), press X
                  10. the screen should go black and the disc should stop spinning
                  11. replace the Alien Resurrection disc for the back-up disc of your choosing carefully as to not remove the tray eject sensor obstruction
                  12. while still holding L1, hold SQUARE and TRIANGLE for 5 seconds
                  13. release all buttons

Just watch as the price of Alien Ressurection skyrockets...

It's amazing how some people manage to stumble upon glitches such as this one.

not a glitch this time, video mention the code had been found sometime in 2022 but it was the only one the code hunters couldn't figure what it did out, then the dev let out that the code allows you boot games and he programmed it in under the company, other dev's on the project and sony's noses.

                          An interesting find.

According to the conclusion of the video, it seems the code was programmed in to allow the testing of a method of booting a second disc. Why this would be required since the PS1 had official multi-disc support anyway doesn't seem clear. Maybe it was simply to make the dev's life easier when testing an early multiple-disc version of the game on stock hardware.

Reminds me of the recent, quickly curtailed blog by a former Rockstar North dev. He wrote a few tidbits about the development of the PS2 GTA games before Rockstar asked him to close it (and he acquiesced).

My favourite was about the moon in the PS2 trilogy. As everyone knows, if you shoot the moon, it changes size between three different options. Ever since I first played those games I wondered why that was.

He explained that it was him that programmed this feature during the development of GTA 3. It was originally implemented because two artists could not decide the size they wanted the moon to be - small and realistic, or large and cinematic. He implemented the ability to switch its size with the sniper rifle to allow them to experiment with different options, and told them to let him know what they preferred and he would lock it in, and remove the ability for the player to change it.

Neither of them ever got back to him. No one remembered to remove the functionality so it was still there in San Andreas, two games later

I agree this is very interesting. Although on a practical level it is surpassed by other, proper hacks. Not sure I’d want to put that many codes in!

Apparently the entire stock of Alien Resurrection PS1 went out of stock at Cex within hours! Is PS1 piracy that hard to do nowadays, or are they just suddenly aware of it being a pretty decent game?

                                Ha, that's funny!

Goes to show the incredibly direct impact that YouTube has on the retro market.

I imagine it just piqued people's interest and they wanted to try it for themselves. I can't imagine CEX had more than a handful of copies - I also note that the price they list it is considerably less than what it's going for on Ebay so maybe also just an arbitrage opportunity.
