Really? I don't think anyone here would do that... .

          Indeed. Cusack would be splattered.

An Empress and the Warriors - hmm not sure what to say about this, the story was ok I guess and the actions sequences (when they appeared) were reasonably well done, not great. But as a whole this didn't really click for me. The entire middle section was far too romancey and went on and on and on. I reckon a 4 or 5 out of 10.

Never heard of that one. Is it a modern?

I started a couple of films but didn't finish them. Ended up watching City on Fire a couple of days later, which is a pretty sad film. Not kf though, I may just watch some more Chow Yun Fat films before I watch another kung fu flick.

Yep - circa 2008 I believe, Donnie Yen and Kelly Chen. Can't really fault Donnie, but he's not enough to take the film up the rankings. I'd say it's sort of Red Cliff style battle action with small bits and pieces of 1 on 1 combat.

From the clip, I can't work out if the action is hyper-quick-cut or steadily framed with a decent shot length. I hope it's the latter - hyper cut is so 00s.

Impact's review says it's a mix. Any shakycam is like Bourne Identity, not the ridiculous amount used in the sequels.

Damn that shakycam! By using it, it's almost as if they're kowtowing to Western style choices, or suggesting that Asian martial artists aren't good enough to hold a shot anymore. Whatever happened to fights you could see properly, and marvel at the actors instead of the camera work/editing?

                              I'm such a dinosaur.

The Raid has got 4.5 out of 5 on IGN!

The Raid is a bone-breaking, gut-punching, action movie triumph. The combination of a great premise, brilliantly-inventive direction, incredible fight sequences and spirited performances makes it easy for us to already proclaim that The Raid is the action movie of the year.

We're pretty confident that the upcoming PG-13 Expendables sequel is going to look like a romantic comedy by comparison.
                                18th May UK release date.

Time for a Kung-Fu thread meetup!
