It was all obviously Coppola- (and Willis-) approved, particularly the restoration of the first film where they've used different takes to replace material that was duped in from other prints when the negs were destroyed. Godfather and to a lesser extent Godfather II have looked pretty cludgy through the years on home video, and the DVD offerings first time round were only okayish. I've only seen the new remastered DVDs, and have no idea what the Blu looks like, but the DVD transfers were a reasonable improvement. Nothing breathtaking, but reasonable enough. GI and II are very dark, some would say murky () films, with a lot of grain because of that, and this will show up more on the Blu, particularly as Coppola and Willis insisted on no DVNR.

Watched Cloverfield over the weekend. Tough to recommend on paper as a Blu-ray purchase, given the nature of it, but boy did it deliver the goods. I remember enjoying it in the cinema, but in a more intimate setting without the big crowd it was actually more harrowing and more powerful. My wife was actually quite affected by it (she'd never seen if before) ... guess she'll be choosing the next one But even though I had seen it my heart was still racing, and I was completely absorbed from start to finish. I'm so temted to watch the extras on those unbelievable special effects but I don't want to kill the magic.

This must be my favourite monster/disaster movie ever. And on Blu-ray it's more real than ever.

      Amazing.

Watch the extras now! I was amazed to see just how much of it is CGI! It makes me appreciate the film 100 times more now because of it.

Strider, does it mention regions on the Godfather set? I know that Paramount as far as I know are always region free but I don't want to order until it's been confirmed.

Managed to find some Godfather: Part II comparison shots on dvdbeaver.com and they've added quite a few blu-ray captures now.

I'm not really a fan of comparing shots as I'd rather see them in the flesh as such but it does give you a feel for how it's been treated.

It's always difficult to know what films really should look like. If Willis & Coppola wanted it to look a certain way and this is how they wanted it to look then this is the way it should look.

Speaking of Iron Man, does anyone know if its region free?

yes it's region free, just watched it.

Oh and there's a brilliant review at DVD bits where they give godfather something like 19.5 out of 20 for picture quaility. Of course, they don't actually talk about the transfer, really, just use that fantastic 'yes, it's been replicated exactly as the director intended clause so it's supposed to look rubbish (i'm obviously paraphrasing here)' so it's an amazing blu-ray.

Don't get me wrong, the Godfather is a massive improvement on the DVD release. I just don't think it makes for a particularly good Blu-Ray.

Think I'm going to wait for the UK release as it's closer to around ?30 - ?35 here and not far away really. I think I like the box better which doesn't exactly matter but as it seems to be cheaper I'll probably wait.

                        Thanks though.

Didn't realise that Kill Bill had hit Blu-ray already. Can't wait to get me a piece of that!!

Shame that the bright yellow and red covers don't sit well with the Blue cases (ooh, get me!)

Can't wait to see Iron Man either. Missed it at the cinema so looking forward to firing up the Blu-ray.

Has anybody seen The Recruit? Was given a copy last week but not sure if it's my cup of tea.

Indeed! I have Vol.2 and it looks very good. There's some film grain reduction which causes a tiny bit of smearing, but if I remember rightly, that's in the master and not the fault of the people who put the disc together. I seem to remember hearing that Quentin Tarantino wasn't too happy with the "unfilmic" look that resulted from the digital intermediate process, back when the film was released.

Incidentally, I just upgraded my audio setup and the PCM soundtrack sounds fantastic

Yeah I have both bills and they do look very cool. I'd award them 4/5 for picture. But then, I'm a retro editor. Everything looks ****ing amazing to me.
