God yes, they deliver the next day. Godfather isn't out in the US until the 23rd.

I'm swamped under with freelance at the mo, so not had a chance to watch them yet. I'm pretty sure I have you on my ps3 list though, so if I do watch them I'll send you a message.

I've only briefly skipped through some chapters, but early reports aren't good I'm afraid. The biggest problem I have is that there's simply no detail. Even mid range shots of faces look really waxy and the close-ups are no different (you notice it immediately as soon as the film begins. I've only literally stopped it here and there, but it does appear to have been heavily DNR'd...

I watched Dark City last night. The quality blew me away, it made the film even more visually striking.

Interesting, I heard bad things about the PQ of Dark City which actually stopped me buying this at full price.

                  Judge for yourself:
So what's next? Two classic war movies, a recent Oscar Best picture nominee and modern Sci-fi classic. All neutered from what should have been a major upgrade worthy of the phrase " . . . the Ultimate High Definition Experience" (sic). Well most high definition titles are worthy. But excessive...

Interesting, as I think Dark City is v good. Yes there are obviously issues, but it's the best I've ever seen the film look.

Anyway, watched the first ten minutes of Godfather and it looks awful. The opening scene has no detail attail and the white labels of the guys shirt is just a messy splotcvh of different colours. I'm sure there's going to be people who say that it's impeccable as it matches the original source material, but if that's the case than Coppola can shove his source material up his bum, as it's way below Paramount's usual standards.*

                    * Again, I've not watched the entire film, so you may want to judge for yourself, before taking my opinion.

It's what I was expecting really as he doesn't seem to know what the hell he's doing!

It's probably the best we're going to get until we get the 'Coppola is Dead So We Gave it To Somebody Who Knows What The Hell They Are Doing Restoration' sometime in the future.

I believe he only handled the first two personally though so it'll be interesting to hear if part 3 has been ruined too.

I thought Dark City was OK too, far from perfect but easily better than what I've seen of it previously.

Well, yeah, it's the best the film has ever looked on home video, but only because we've just had the DVD as comparison before. With BD, I expect something definitive (or close to it), rather than an incremental upgrade.

Look forward to checking out The Godfather...

It's difficult Lyris and I don't personally like DNR, but unfortiunately, we're not going to be the ones to decide it, it's going to be the general public.

Take Dark City for example. Like you've said, it's the best it's ever looked, and for many that's going to be more than enough. Joe Public doesn't have access to the original print, so they can't make a direct comparison. All they'll see is a bloody good image that craps all over the DVD print from a great height. They certainly won't wonder 'hmm, this looks great, but I'm sure it could look even better'.

Of course you could argue that people like myself (and anyone else who professionally reviews Blu-Rays) have a chance of stopping DNR while it's still in its relaitve infancy, and I do what I can in my reviews (I never mention grain now, as people like youreself have shown me how important it is to the overall image of the film) but if I was to give a transfer like Dark City 2* out of 5 for PQ because it's not faitful to the original cinematic print, then Joe, after viewing the pic himself and seeing (in his eyes) an image that looks fantastic, will just ignore my future reviews as I clearly don't know what I'm on about.

Joe Public will likely be watching on a TV that's set up to give truly wacky results, so I'd say pleasing them as they are rather than educating them (in a non snooty way of course - nobody likes to be told "your TV sucks") would be a slightly dubious goal.

My point being that, none of the stuff they watch is going to look fantastic anyway - not just by videophile standards, either. Most of the people I've seen with HDTVs running on the out of the box settings just aren't happy with Blu-ray anyway, and seem to just tweak the settings to make the picture look different every now and again.

For mass-market reviews, that does put reviewers in a very tricky situation. I agree that they have to cater for both groups and try and get both sides into the review. But, what gets me is the "it's better than DVD" mentality. In two years we seem to have gone from "Beyond High Definition" (their words - not mine!) to "Good enough to be an improvement" for problematic titles. Joe Public was, apparently, upset at the black bars that appeared on their TV set when they saw DVD movies for the first time, but now (in Europe at least), they're an accepted feature (or one which can be dealt with by a Zoom button without having an impact on other viewers).

Joe Public should be taught how to use their TV's noise reduction feature if they don't like what films look like... why mess up the source for everyone?

All of the above sounds quite depressing, but the number of excellent looking Blu-ray Discs which take advantage of the format is really high. Way higher than it ever was for DVD...

Dark city is perfect in the video department apart from the DNR on faces, the rest of the film is stunning on BRD.
The faces are 100% not a reason to buy it vote with your wallet

I don't think Coppola actually did anything personally did he? I thought Robert Harris and chums were dealing with the restoration.
