That would make no difference for me as I get the same problem on the PS3 and my (new region free) Blu-ray player.

The animation is pretty nice, to be fair, and, visually, there's tonnes of imagination at play, it's just that a) you've got Brendan Fraser doing "comedy" and b) the characters, humour and general concept are fairly vile.

It's worth watching, just have the Disappointment button already depressed.

Most of the best discs I've seen have mostly been animation, its all I get to watch with children. Highlights have been Ponyo and Madagascar 2.

For sound, Fight Club and Akira are king.

For overall I think the Blade Runner 5 disc USA edition is the best, an absolute disgrace this is not available off the shelf in the UK/Europe. I also have a fondness for Children Of Men on Blu-ray too.

Just for the record, everyone I know that has seen Band of Brothers on Bluray has said the same as you. Too quiet then suddenly extremely loud!

I'm playing this back through my Ooppo BDP-80 and Pioneer VSX-919 amp and I thought the soundtrack was wonderfully dynamic. Dialogue for me even whispered has been clear and audible even over my projector which is right next to me at 28db (until I ceiling mount it). Of course when the action does get going it is thumpingly good, airplane engines, naval artillery, tanks, grenades, and machine gun and rifle fire. A wonderfully conceived series and excellent blu-ray material, I'm just annoyed with myself for not picking it up sooner.

Can't comment in a great deal of depth as I've still to watch Diebuster or the separate bonus disc which comes in it's own box. Gunbuster was very well presented, watched it with the original Japanese dub and English subs. Of course it's the abridged movie (unlike the laserdisc set I sold today) but it does cover enough of the storyline to be enjoyable. The video transfer on Gunbuster is good but 4:3 with a small portion presented in 16:9.

I got the boxset for ?39.99 from a third party seller on Amazon UK but I see the prices have shot back up since then and I think the US versions are region A locked. (I'm multi region but you may need to consider that if you're tempted to buy the set). Though I'd be happy to swap mine with you if you found yourself stuck with only region A.

                Bit of a guilty pleasure.

Thanks for the info Stu. Seems to be going for about £24.99 on ebay at the moment, might have to take the plunge when i've sold some things on there.

Why hasn't Anchorman got a release on bluray yet?

The Ultimate Bourne Trilogy turned up this morning, picked up from HMV for £17.99.

Haven't watched any of them in a while, that's my Saturday night sewn up.

Aye, Anchorman and Lost In Translation are the only two HD-DVDs I have that are yet to be released on Blu that I would consider double dipping for.

LIT would need a new master though as the HD-DVD was a little disappointing. Still a truly amazing film though.

I recently finished my second run through of The Prisoner on blu-ray. Absolutely fantastic show and an impressive 4 blu-ray (2 DVD) set, didn't particularly want the extras but it came in a massive box with books and some other sort of stuff.

They've done a fantastic job on the visual side of things but as is pretty standard for material like this neither the mono or 5.1 mixes really stands out.

                          EDIT:
If anybody is interested, here's some other feller's photos of the set. From the photos the set doesn't appear to contain much outside of the show.

Watching LAH now. Picture is a bit all over the place - there's been a couple of really ropey shots - but it's still funny and sounds EPIC!!

I was just watching Ep 4 of Band of Brothers, but the image quality was all over the place. Are some parts of it in SD, or have I got a problem with my equipment?

The barn scene in particular looked awful. And towards the end at about 51m 52secs the dark sky would be flickering light/dark. Looked really rubbish.

I checked all my connections and they were fine, and other scenes on the same disc and episode looked brilliant.
