I don't think anyone's claiming that Star Wars doesn't need special effects, of course it does as it's an epic space opera, the effects were a big part of what made the original films so memorable. But effects alone won't do it if the substance and the heart isn't there, like is the case with the prequels, otherwise it's going to be just another mindless and cold Hollywood special effects film.

Special effects don't exist anymore. Now all we have are 'effects'. There's nothing special about them whatsoever. In the Star Wars prequels, it's the non-special effects scenes which are the unusual parts (well, to be 100% truthful, there aren't any non-special effects scenes). Hopefully any further films will move away from this gratuitous use of CG.

People like Paul Verhoeven tend to get the blend of CGI and traditional make up and special effects just right , like in his Starship Troopers and Hollowman films, Peter Jackson is another one that gets a good blend of CGI and traditional make up and special effects spot on

When used right CGI will always complement a film, but if the film stinks then people will always fall back on the 'it's just a load of CGI' argument. LOTR is full of it for example a lot more than most films, and yet people don't complain because the films are good.
The Starwars prequels were not 'crap' as some would put it because of the overuse of CGI, they were crap because the scripts and the acting were not up to par with the orignials, not to mention the rabid fanboy expectations that could be never met anyway.

I think the best use of CGI and traditionalist effects is Saving Private Ryan. It's incredibly hard to tell when CGI is being used in that film
