I don't think anyone's claiming that Star Wars doesn't need special effects, of course it does as it's an epic space opera, the effects were a big part of what made the original films so memorable. But effects alone won't do it if the substance and the heart isn't there, like is the case with the prequels, otherwise it's going to be just another mindless and cold Hollywood special effects film.

So, Harrison Ford is 'open to the idea' of appearing in VII.... I'm sure his bank manager is also quite 'open to the idea' too.

Ok, so it would be cool having at least one of the original cast reprising their roles, but please give him an appropriate role for a 70 year old.

Special effects don't exist anymore. Now all we have are 'effects'. There's nothing special about them whatsoever. In the Star Wars prequels, it's the non-special effects scenes which are the unusual parts (well, to be 100% truthful, there aren't any non-special effects scenes). Hopefully any further films will move away from this gratuitous use of CG.

They do and there's a few films that get the blend of them about right like in Batman the Dark Night and it might be CGI but the effects in the likes of Avatar and Prometheus were brilliant and really well done .
People like Paul Verhoeven tend to get the blend of CGI and traditional make up and special effects just right , like in his Starship Troopers and Hollowman films, Peter Jackson is another one that gets a good blend of CGI and traditional make up and special effects spot on

Don't diss the 'Legacy' .. great film, and you couldn't have done that film without CGI, just as you couldn't have done Tron Classic without what was then CGI.

When used right CGI will always complement a film, but if the film stinks then people will always fall back on the 'it's just a load of CGI' argument. LOTR is full of it for example a lot more than most films, and yet people don't complain because the films are good.

The Starwars prequels were not 'crap' as some would put it because of the overuse of CGI, they were crap because the scripts and the acting were not up to par with the orignials, not to mention the rabid fanboy expectations that could be never met anyway.

LOL, hey I enjoyed legacy too. Great OST and visuals. Twas merely making the point that it was a Disney film and SW has now become Disney property so the mad use of CGI was only going to continue. On a similar note I thought John Carter was ok as well.

I think the best use of CGI and traditionalist effects is Saving Private Ryan. It's incredibly hard to tell when CGI is being used in that film

Yep I think that's spot on really

The most impressive use of CGI I have seen so far was the first 10 minutes or so of Captain America, I still don't understand how they got Chris Evans on that body so convincingly, quite a few times I honestly thought it was just another actor that looked like him, impressive stuff.

Yeah, I actually did a double take. I said to the missus "I thought he was taller than that"!

Agree, apart from Jurassic Park 1, the first 10 mins of CA were impressive. The skinny small Chris Evans look alike guy obviously made things a lot easier LOL. As with 99% of movies, If you watch the making-of doc then a lot of the magic is taken away.

Michael Arndt will write the screenplay for the new starwars film. Hes done Toy Story 3, little miss sunshine and co-wrote the script for the new hunger games film.

Little Miss Sunshine writer Michael Arndt will write the next instalment in the Star Wars series, Lucasfilms confirms.

As long as Disney stop these fr***ing Vodafone adverts they'll be doing a great job.
