Godzilla - 2014

I'm seeing this tomorrow. If they don't have scenes that equal this, I'll be disappointed -

Saw it at the IMAX earlier and loved it. Great build up and reveal with a fantastic end battle. The King looks great and it had a surprising plot.

I'm going to wait a week or so before I see this. I couldn't stomach having it ruined by horrible, ****ty kids and teens.

It's very different to pacific rim (which I also loved). The first two thirds of godzilla are more about conspiracies and plays out as a disaster movie which builds up to the amazing third act which is worth the price of admission alone.

This was totally excellent, where Pacific Rim enthralled on its large scale action, it was gloss on a sad sack movie, Godzilla gives you a half decent screenplay to lock into.

There are plenty of recent Sci fi tropes that we've seen recently recycled here - War of the world's, Cloverfield and Pacific Rim that are staring you in the face, but here I was rocking in my seat and nearly fist pumping at times. Plenty of fun.

Apparently the studios are starting to look at making Godzilla 2 already. If that doesn't sum up the chances of a Pacific Rim sequel who knows what does.

Just back from seeing this. Well 10 years after Final Wars we finally have the big guy back and he's awesome. I loved the movie. Really true to the Toho movies (some of the military briefing scenes were hilariously like the Japanese movies, in a good way), managed to craft a good human story too and the monster action was incredible. The sense of scale was superb.

They got so many things right for me. Being true to the Japanese movies was such a big part of that. This story could have slotted right in with the Toho ones and it gave us that briefing room science/military stuff that the classic movies so often have. But they also had the point of view of regular people and that really gave a glimpse into what the world would be like in a situation like this. I felt they got that bang on.

That moment where we saw the guy come down in the parachute and then she turned and the jet hit the building was stunning.

And I almost applauded when the monsters really did their thing.

One small negative -

I felt the sound design on Godzilla's atomic ray was very weak. When I saw the blue, I was waiting for my ears to be assaulted but the sound was really subtle there.

Really if that's all I have to complain about after being a Godzilla fan for so long, I think that's a testament to how right they got it.

I saw this yesterday. Decided to do 2D as 3D in dark films just don't work.

Not really up to my hopes and expectations - which were very high but it is still a soild Godzilla film and worth watching. I loved the design of the monsters but what I didn't like lack of emotion I felt for the humans (except maybe Cranston). Even the ending in the football stadium was a bit meh.

I would also rather they shot more monster fight scenes in daylight. Much like PR - too many night time scenes.

Solid 7 out of 10 and I eagerly await the sequel.

I agree with everything there Ono. Cranston was amazing....just wish he was the lead for the entire film.

You're absolutely right on that point. Besides, the 3D on this movie is minimal, an afterthought.

The movie is solid, though. I'm glad they didn't screw this one up.

I saw this earlier and thought it was pretty dull. I can see it was trying to be more faithful to older Toho Gojira stuff with emphasis on the human angle. But it was pretty formulaic and didn't build tension at all.
The main characters were very one dimensional too.
And as ever the big CGI scenes were in the dark.
A wasted opportunity.

After all the waiting and all the hype the feeling after watching it was pure....meh. It had all the ingredients for a great Godzilla flick but it was just missing something that I couldn't quite put my finger on. I can appreciate that it followed the recipe for the original films but it smacked of being a little too cartoony because of that. The action was dull (Godzilla appears and gets ready to fight....aaaand the camera cuts to something else) Even the final fight was bland and dark (apart from THAT move) Maybe I need to watch it again but upon first viewing it felt a little flat.
