Films You Have Watched

Watched quite a few recently but the highlight is Anatomy of a Fall. Recommended.

Last night I watched the animated movie Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths Part One. It started a bit bland, then got better after the halfway point and the ending was not much really. I somewhat enjoyed it, not a bad movie but not great either.

As it's on paramount, I watched Transformers Rise of the beasts, well I say I watched it I dozed off after about an hour. Then forced myself to go back and finish it off, Felt like it was a Saturday morning cartoon in the story and execution, Big bad guy kills popular character but he's a pretty crap bad guy. Mashing in a load of beasts transformers that don't show up till half in way in means you have a load of side characters that don't get developed or given any real story.

It's like they learnt nothing from the bumblebee film, and just went back to making Bayverse ensemble rubbish that spends too much time on human characters at the cost of ignoring the real thing people want to see cool giant robots.

Watched Police Story 3 to round off the trilogy. The spectacle is off the scale and Michelle Yeoh is a perfect partner for Jackie. The first is still my fave though. The blend of comedy and action is perfect and the strong 80s vibe does it for me too.

Also watched Killers of the Flower Moon and Pinocchio. Both brilliant.

Caught Poor Things last week which I think is my favourite Lanthimos film to date. As well as getting proper laughs out of me, it's still plenty out there and clearly takes delights in your discomfort, but I felt it hung together a bit better and is a bit more relevant thematically than others of his I've seen.

Then last night I crossed a long overdue hold-out on the to watch list in arguably the best way possible, after QuarterlyChomp pointed out that 2001: A Space Odyssey was being shown at the BFI IMAX. I went in fairly tired, which though not ideal given its pace is often quite languorous, but it still absolutely blew me away. For decades I've already known the story, seen so many stills and clips of its most iconic shots, been told how incredible its physical effects were, and so on, yet I still found plenty to enjoy for myself that I wasn't prepared for. In particular: how deeply impactful I found the last act, even as someone who is decidedly non spiritual. Incredible.

Bowling for Columbine, never seen it before, although it is now a few years old I think it's still relevant and yes Heston was an arsehole.

Harry and the Hendersons
The suit for Harry remains excellently done and the film is good fun. The kids enjoyed it too and it's really helping to develop their appreciation of John Lithgow

We had that on VHS from Father Christmas. Loved that film as a kid, forgot Davis Suchet was in it until recently!

We watched The Creator last night. Less convoluted and annoying that I imagined going in blind only half watching the odd trailer for it online. Looked amazing, honestly feels like it started off as some alternative viewpoint live action remake of Akira in places. Story was fine, not a perfect movie but I enjoyed it a lot.

I watched The Creator. It looked amazing, really beautiful, and I kind of wish I had seen it on the big screen. The story was very clunky and the main character totally lacked charisma so the emotion just didn't land for me. I could see it working really hard to get an emotional rise out of me and it just didn't happen. But I still enjoyed it, it has some great sequences and looks lovely.

It feels like it takes forever for the ship element to kick in and when it does the film is lesser for it, overall it was still entertaining to watch but not one you'd revisit often.

Wasn't mad on Saltburn. Looks great, and there are some good performances, but didn't think the story was as smart as it clearly thinks it is, or that it was as shocking as it wanted to be.

I agree. It's a cool film and worth a watch, but I feel like if I was a teenager I'd probably think it was the best thing since sliced bread, which is where a lot of the hype is coming from. Being slightly grizzled I can see where a lot of it is less effective repeats of stuff which has appeared elsewhere.

There's some goofy stuff throughout, but the only real major area of issue for me is the third act. I actually think the first two are really great at what they do, even if some sections (the catty karaoke scene in particular) are ever so slightly risible.

But to spend the end of the film showing us in absolutely explicit detail how the protagonist is a murderous mastermind who apparently always had the intention of killing the family and stealing Saltburn from the moment he caught a glimpse of Felix was really very silly.

On a basic level it didn't make a lot of sense. In the scene in the London cafe, are we meant to believe he's simply been waiting years and years for this moment? It's just not credible enough.

Honestly they could've ended it on the grave boning scene for me and I think it would have been more effective.

I had the old Stalin quote about death ringing in my ears afterwards. One murder by the protagonist was shocking, but half a dozen of them was, well, not a statistic, but pretty silly.

Robocop

Both classics.
Robocop will never age. It's timeless. Plus the Clarence and his gang are such a bunch. Yeah, they're evil but they have character. Well, besides the Asian guy. He's just kind of there.

A true classic tonight!

iveI've seen Ghostbusters a million times but I've never seen it on a big screen since seeing at the Odeon back in 1984. It's amazing how much I'm noticing watching this 4K BluRay via projection.

Watched a Norwegian film, as you do, a week or so ago Thelma (2017).

Interesting, if slow burning, atmospheric, supernatural 'horror' film about a disturbed student who is not quite 'normal'. There is a Carrie like element to it although far less dramatic but darker and creepier because of that.

Worth catching if you like psychological horror films.
