Is anyone here using the Paypal Security key (credit-card type for £3 one-off fee or SMS at standard rates)?

My account got hacked last year and, while I've changed passwords and whatnot (and now got a Mac, which is actually more scary I think), I think something like this is good as it's an extra layer. Of course, you can still login without it if you enter extra security information so it could be meaningless if whoever has your login has enough information.

Out of the two options, I'm wondering which is better. On the one hand, £3 could equal around 30 logins using SMS at 10p a pop, and I tend to login to my Paypal quite frequently, but it would mean carrying the card everywhere. I wonder if it's possible to sign up for both and use either at login in case I'm out of the house and left the card at home.

It's tempting but one of the best things about paypal is being able to use it subtly anywhere, getting out a key fob robs it of that (plus I'd just end up losing it).

Had my ebay account hacked once (200 fake handbag auctions placed in 2 minutes, lucky I was at my PC as the emails flooded in) but for some reason they didn't attempt to raid my paypal.

Cheques? I think they went to the same place as dial up Internet and French bread pizzas. To be seriouse though I think they are takeing the piss with chargeing you 3 times for the same transaction rubbish. insertion fees, final sale fees then bloody paypal fees. There buisness model seems to be the same as the British goverments tax system.

I'm just discovering this too. I thought I had made allowances for the fees they would be taking... not realising that they don't actually deduct the eBay fees for the auction prior to sending the balance on to Paypal, so you still get charged fees based on the full whack (even though eBay have already snaffled some of it). That's pretty damn sneaky.

Honestly, I'm not too sure.

It happened when I first got a Paypal account back in 2001 - Someone used it to pay a betting site but it got declined and the account was frozen automatically.

Then last year it happened and I've no idea how, and they couldn't (or wouldn't) tell me anything related to it on account of data protection. I didn't get any emails about account information being changed (password was still the same, an address was added and email notification was disabled) and only found out it was hacked in the first place when I got a call from my credit card company telling me they'd stopped some payments. Nothing else was affected, from what I could see (Hotmail account, etc)

There had been some issues for me earlier last year related to shopto.net getting hacked but I didn't hear about it happening to Paypal. As to whether it was a keylogger or the like, my system would always come up clean and I've always been a bit paranoid about stuff like keygens and the like, even when people claim they're false positives.

Paypal now tells you when you were logged in last and I did start recording this info in an excel file but I've become lazy again!

I normally wait about 7 days as you cant file a dispute until 7 days after auction ended so u cant do anything b4 really.
If I dont get owt then I file a dispute for non payment, only because it reminds the buyer to pay if he's genuinely forgotten.
In a dispute he's then got 7 days to pay up. If he doesnt he gets an unpaid item strike & u get your FVF back. So all in all you'll have to wait a total of 14 days before u can relist.

It'd be nice if the buyer just emailed u as soon as the auction ended to say he didnt want the item, but from my experience they dont, which leaves you in limbo not knowing whether to relist straightaway or waiting for payment that might not come.

Yeah well I got this from a buyer after he pressed buy it now for a brand new ps2 game:

I dont want the game. Thats why I'm SELLING it, not swapping it ffs. And why would I want a version that woulnt work on my ps2 anyway?

Incidentally, make sure you check your "you have paid for your item" screens. Seems Ebay/Paypal are giving out random voucher codes (almost certainly tied to an account). I've just got a 10% (maximum discount of £70). Shame I don't actually want to buy anything now.

How the hell do those work? Does eBay/PayPal absorb the cost, or does some poor seller have to lose 10% of his final price?

Considering eBay/PP skim 20% off the top, they lose nothing with such an offer.
