Absolutely. I resisted doing it for a while until a mate talked me into it and I wouldn't consider ever buying without a proper recommendation again - the improvement was noticeable and instant.

Will be paying the doctor a visit soon but can anyone give me some advice on what I should be doing. I can't imagine running will help me.

On a side note anyone know where I can get some accurate scales.
Do you have eating issues? If so, you might want to consider a thorough check over before taking up weights or running - if you haven't been getting enough calcium in your diet then your bones might be weakened. However the good news is that weight training also boosts bone strength so as long as you start slow you'll be ok.

Don't expect any immediate results. I'd suggest a 6 week period of startup where you concentrate on core muscles (back and stomach) and light exercise to give you a good base on which to develop a healthy body. Ramp up after that and you should notice quick improvements. Avoiding CV completely will not be good for your heart. Try cross trainers if you have a gym for low impact, or swimming, or else, create yourself a circuit in the garden (think back to school).

Remember to measure everything beforehand so you can track progress.

This body monitor also comes with a limb tape measure for easy self measurement. Very good piece of kit and will last forever.

Shh don't tell anyone but I contemplating getting healthy, and maybe getting fit! No running or any crazy stuff like that? But maybe some small weights and press ups *shudder* and sit ups maybe...
Does this sound like a good idea?

This year, I'm gonna try and cut down on the Polish lager, cider and wine.

If I have beer, it's gonna be Coor's Light (an amazing 160 cals per 4.5% 500ml can!) and the diet coke with vodka.

I'm pretty 'cardiovascular' given that (being a decent porter) I speedwalk between 9-15 miles per average work day, and my increased strength means I can lift an average-sized corpse into the 'death trolley' on my own - but I'm starting to get backfat again, and that's not a good sign.

Cheers for the advice Charles. Finally my dissertation for uni will be finished this weekend so I can begin my quest. I should be just like Axel Stone by the end of the year. Maybe not...

I got myself some decent running shoes at the weekend, ending up spending ?70 on some asics as the bloke in the shop said they were good and they had high arch support.
Ran with them on Sunday, but the run was poor as it was late in the day and I had had a big night out on Saturday. Got my 15-20 mins power run to do tonight as part of my programme. Was planning on doing it first thing this morniong but couldn't get out of bed.

Just did a 5k jog on the Heath, quite pleased with myself. It took me 30 mins.

I need to drop some weight and figured jogging is as good a way as any.

Main problem is the commute, I have to leave the house at 7.15am to get down to the station and don't get home until 7.30pm.

Would it be insane getting up at 6.15am to jog for half an hour? Is it better to jog in the morning or the evening? Should I be out every morning, is that too much or what I should be working up to?

Any jogging advice greatly appreciated, I guess I should start tomorrow morning.

Not insane to go out that early at all - before my knees went to pieces, I used to love having an early morning run - used to set me up for the day.

When I started out I followed a fairly gentle walk/run program that gradually built up over 10 weeks to me running 5K a few times a week. I'll try and find it again to get the details.

Cheers Garf, bit worried about my knees too - though I think they were dodgy due to lack of exercise more than being worn out...

This is the program a mate has recommended - seems like a nice ease into it all...

That looks quite similar to the program I followed - I felt a bit daft as first with the walking bits, but it really did help build my fitness levels up.

As I say, I did mine over 10 weeks, and after that I just carried on adding to it, as suggested at the end of the BUPA one you've linked to.

One thing I found that helped me was getting a running watch that you can set intervals on, so that it beeps every 2 minutes or so, or whatever interval you are running that week. I got a Timex Ironman one, for about 35 quid.

another vote for the walk / run to start with, my routine started as 30 minutes split into 1 minute jog / 1 minute walk , then after 2 weeks it went to 2 min jog / 1 min walk then week 4 went to run for 30 minutes, now i can comfortably run 5 miles.

as for a timer, i used a thing called a "gymboss" you set 2 times (run, walk) and for how many rounds of this, and it beeps or vibrates at each interval, cost me £11 off ebay
