Your going to laugh but i don't have the will power to have an eating disorder

Got given a big packet of Maltesers on Friday, normally i would eat the lot in the space of 20 minutes but i have been eating them slowly 10 per day, its amazing how many you get in a packet.

I tried to give up sweets and everything nasty but i found if i lapsed it was in a big way, doing it this way means im still getting something i want but not in large enough amounts to effect me.

This is where you guys tell me Maltesers are the wost possible thing i could eat and should not be eating any, i try to give them up and lapse, its happened so many times before with other things.

As i said last year i gave up coke (the soft drink). i moved onto diet then was told i should not be drinking that either and ended up lapsing, in the end i cut all soft drinks out, its helped me to stop my weight from going any higher.

i am starting to feel the effects of the exercise, while its nothing to what you guys do its enough for me at this time.

I have been walking round with stomach pains, its not like a stomach ache its like a bloated feeling. You guys said i may get this, i guess it means its working.

Time I joined in here I think.

Have been considerably overweight most my life and two and a half years ago after a very long time had finally managed to get from 18 stone to 11 stone and 1 pound and in my ideal weight range, l managed this through some gym work but mostly from doing alot of walking and playing golf and just eating what I would consider normally, not really dieting.

Thing is I let myself go, got a car, new office job and reverted to old eating habits and its gone back on, I weighed myself about 3 weeks ago and im back up to about 17 stone 10 pounds, its really dissapointing.

Although the strange thing is I dont feel as big this time as when I was this weight before, I think the weight has distributed differently this time, when I weighed myself I was expecting to be between 15 to 16 stone.

Anyways, so alot of work to do and right now is a good time to start, no job, no car and nice outdoor weather.

What I have decided this time is to forget the scales, if I do weigh myself it would be monthly, anything less just doesn't give enough accuracy and just causes stress and dumb crash diet methods.

The main problem for me is avoiding completely the trigger foods, but its difficult.

What I need is advice on what foods to eat which are healthy but hold off the need for more food, it cant be too moorish, you know when you think your about to have just one bag of crisps and end up triggering a hunger which results in eating a few, thats what does it for me, im fine untill something triggers this need for food.

Oh and for some reason I hardly ever feel full, even after a really big meal I may feel full for 10-20 mins before being as hungry as I was before eating, does my head in.

Anyway, I will try and update any progress and give advice if I can to others.

Personally I eat a lot of different kinds of fruit throughout the day. Rather than the crisps have an apple or a peach or something. If you want something sweet: have some strawberries.

Everything tastes great at this time of year too

          Mike -

Since i have been doing this i have noticed (and through other advice) that not feeling full does not mean you need to eat. It sounds to me like your body is crying out for water.

If you drink regular amounts of water you will know when you are hungry.

Also what you need to do is take longer to eat. The longer you take gives your body more chance to react whats been put in it. You could eat 4 cream cakes and feel full but you could eat half a cream cake and also feel full (by eating it slowly) - not that you should be eating any cream cakes anyway.

You need to chew your food and eat as slowly as you can, don't worry nobody is looking at you they are more likely to look if you shovel 4 big mac meals in your mouth in 30 seconds.

The reason i am here is through abuse from uni, every day have some sort of fast food and drink in the pub. Now im finished i have trained myself to listend to my body so i know when to eat and the pouinds are dropping at a very good rate now.

lost another 5 pounds yesterday so im now down 11 pounds and i have not been doing as much exercise as i should...

Mikewl, good luck man. Go for it. As for feeling full, it's because your stomach has stretched. For example, if you go for a slap up feed in the evening (chinese or indian perhaps - they are always large), your stomach stretches to accomodate, so in the morning, you wake up feeling hungry because even though you had a huge meal, your stomach hasn't returned to normal size yet. If you leave it for an hour or so, it will realise it's not getting any food and shrink again, and you won't feel hungry.

As for food, I'd just recommend eating stuff with loads of different colours to make sure you are getting enough nutrients and ensuring you do eat things like crisps occassionally so you don't feel your food life has gone dull. Get some will power and only have one packet of crisps though and dont let it trigger any more.

Ive started taking in wee bags of grapes and strawberries to work to stop me going through crisps and things

              It seems to be working

Gillian McKeith (the **** woman) suggests that you should eat fruit prior to your meal as it speeds up your metabolism and I have to agree, Ive been doing this every day this week and I feel great

Down 12 pounds now... Seams to be working.

However today i have had a large grab bag of crisps as well as a not so healthy tea, and no exercise. Hope this does not effect me to greatly (its only 1 day)

Don't worry about it, having a bag of crisps every now and then will do you no harm at all (and may help you mentally with your diet) it's when they become a normal everyday part of your diet that it's a problem.

I was going through a break up at the time, however decided to give it another shot.

The past two days i have not done anything and have eaten like a pig, who says its only women who binge eat? I would not have noticed it before but because i was on the health kick noticed it and have now put it to bed again.

Into week 2 of my own training program - cut down all fizzy drinks, sweets etc, cut my carb intake down and dairy products (in other words, healthy eating all round)...

going to the gym 2-3 times a week, last week (monday) was the first time I have been to the gym since breaking my ankle a couple of years ago - talk about being in pain for a couple of days afterwards - doing high intensity workouts with low to mid weights, nothing that is pushing me strength wise but I am doing high reps in everything - been doing 30 mins CV before hitting the weights, and then 20 mins afterwards as a cooler (before weight training I am hitting the cross trainer for 10 mins, 10 mins on the bike, and then 10 mins on either climber, rowing machine or tread mill - after weight training I am hitting the tread mill for 20 mins - 15 mins building up to a fast running pace and then 5 mins slowing it down to standstill) - after that I am doing 5 mins stretching ... only into week 2 and I am feeling a difference.

Upped my water intake considerably - only thing I am drinking at the mo apart from a protein shake within 20 mins of my work out - think I may be drinking too much though (2-3 litres a day, plus about another litre per training session).

Water is good, everyone is meant to drink 2l a day, thats without the additional consumption needed when exercising, also bear in mind the weather will of made you dehydrated also. It will increase the metabolism, that combined with a seemingly strenuous gym routine will get results failry quickly Id say.

Is it really worth taking a protein shake? I try to eat a lot of natural protein after work out but am having trouble getting my weight above 80kg without getting flabby again. Generally eat quite healthy but would ideally like to put on more muscle, my problem is that even when I stack the weights up I see little progress.
                            Any advice would be appreciated.

I personally find that drinking a protein shake upto 20 mins after my workouts helps me out in the recovery process - might be complete bollocks but psychological it works for me

That is supposed to be a "side effect" of the protein shakes, so as well as helping to build muscle, people I know who have tried them do tend to put a bit of weight on.
