I know of someone who shoots a lot of abandoned building. I guess if you visit a few these building the risk is greater.

    Anyway, more old buildings.

Sadly Bacon sandwiches might never taste as good again..........

I don't like it when this thread slips to the middle of page two, makes me sad. Anyone been out and about this w/e? I wasn't!

Took this a few weeks ago at Hampton Court. Couldn't believe there were two young Herons so willing to allow me to get so close as every adult Heron I've ever seen has flown away before I've got within 50 meters.

I only want to keep one on Flickr so which one do you prefer?

Photo class tonight and we're supposed to be walking up to strangers and asking them if we can take their picture, should be fun!

I prefer the first one, it's a pity the background is a little unappealing , nonetheless, like you say, these things are normally pretty flighty so you did well to get these shots.

I did take a few pics this w/e:

Couple more on the camera I haven't d/l'd yet, but not much of any worth.

Thanks for the feedback Marty, I do have one shot where one of them was sitting on the grass on top of that board so may look at that again with an eye on the background.

That's a good shot, well exposed, must have been tricky to take.

It was done with a Canon A420 P&S in super macro mode all I did was frame it

Cheat! Never use the auto modes

My teacher actually insists we use fully manual for everything, it's a pain in the ass, once you select the ap then are fidling with shutter speed the shot can (and has been for me) gone.

I have some more live band stuff to put up - will try to do so by tomorrow. I've been using my new 50mm F1.8 lens and it is cracking Should be some good stuff there I hope...

Which is why I don't very often - unless you're exposing for something particularly tricky that you know the camera is going to get wrong - AP and SP modes give you the same level of control. The camera metres better than me, and like you say, if you're messing around settings things up, the subject can be long gone.

Has the teacher given the reason why? On the courses I've done that was never a requirement.

Think it's probably down to individual teachers. My mate told me about his who much prefer pupils to compose the image in camera rather than use photoshop to crop. Personally think some are a little too anal in their teaching. Cropping/colour etc have all been things that traditional wet developers have done for years.

Not directly but I'm guessing as it's a fairly all encompassing course it's to get our heads around why what we are doing affects the picture. Once everyone understands the reasons they are selecting what they are I guess it'll be OK to let the camera do it for us.

Needless to say I think I'm above that and use Av mode most of the time instead of manual as I get the same shutter speed in a much shorter time

Looking forward to the band stuff Dan.

Arrived back from a very wet and muddy Womad festival with 8Gb of photos

Once I've cleaned the mud off I'll start processing. Hopefully I got some good shots but the wet conditions made things quite challenging.

Silly q: on a DSLR does it automatically know how low the F number is on your lens and thus adjust its setting accordingly? Or does it let you select the lowest value the camera has and it's inconsequential as your lens can only open so wide?

                          Comment

It knows, the lens and camera can 'talk' to each other as it were so you can only select the widest ap, it won't display anything lower.

It also knows the highest setting (smallest hole) that the lens is capable of at whatever zoom.

That's what I presumed, but I just thought about it and couldn't remember when I used to have a DSLR.

Only recently I started taking a few more pictures and really yearned for the flexibility again. Really want a K10D and the new 16-50 DA, alas...
