Happy birthday Alastair! Great photos there! I particularly like the little lemur and the light on the iguana. Much lens lust on my part too

Spag, that seems like a pretty decent capture. I don't have any tips, but try selectively boosting the rainbow part in Photoshop.

Ish, that lens seems really nice. How are you finding it so far?

Anybody got any tips on photographing rainbows?
No tips for rainbows at all, if you get any let me know

as for the wonky horizons, I wouldnt worry about that, thats a very easy fix, 80% of my photographs probably need straightening.

For my shots that I really want to keep, I usually shoot then review. If it looks under or overexposed I adjust the exposure compensation (AV or TV) or just change the settings if shooting in manual. If you really want you can review the histrogram to see if your making the most of the available range.

Check your metering to make sure it is on evaluative metering, if it is on a center weighted setting you may be tricking your light meter and under exposing.

And if you dont already shoot raw! you can recover upto 2 stops of underexposure so its well worth the little bit of extra effort if you really need a shot.

Al, lovely zoo shots. I have been trying to get to the zoo for weeks but my partner is anti zoo so it aint going to happen with her . I told her I would use the trip to document the unhappiness of captivity but she didnt buy it

I am so jealous and those are really great shots, good stuff

So far it seems like a great lens. It's nice and fast and very sharp right to the edges.

It's going to take me a while to product good output from it though as it's the first time I've used a wide angle lens and it's very different in terms of composition.

If this headache goes away I might head out for another night shoot later on

Here's another effort with it from today:

And finally... anyone else come across bythom before. Very useful photography site.

One more thing... after using the trial for a month I bought a license for LightZone this week having found it incredibly useful and easy to use.

Went out again this evening for some more dusk / night shooting. Only took the wide angle lens (to force myself to learn how to use it!).

You can see how sharp the lens is on the shot above.

                Also got this one:

Lovely stuff Ish, I'm seriously tempted! Where did you say you got it from?

Like that B&W shot Ish - gives a good sense of height.

Not heard of LightZone before, so I've just downloaded the trial. Shall give it a go later.

That lens looks amazing Ish, def the one I'd be going for if I had the cash for a WA at the mo, seems to blow the sigma away.

I got a Lowepro Mini Trekker AW for my birthday, great bag, loads of room, though I never knew I had so much gear and have filled it already! Dan, let me know if you're still interested in the old bag (Lowepro Slingshot 100 AW) or if not I'll advertise it elsewhere.

                        Thanks or the comments guys!

PeteJ - I just got it from one of the (many!) Hong Kong importers on eBay. I could dig out which one if you're interested.

If you've got Lightroom or Aperture then the basic edition makes an excellent and inexpensive addition to the toolset. The whole "region" thing is fairly intuitive given you can always see where the regions are and although, I suspect, it doesn't do much I couldn't do in Photoshop it actually lets me do it in seconds as opposed to hours.

Hopefully, weather being well, I'm making an early start tomorrow to head over to Cambridge. Should get a shot or two

Out again today. Very washed out pale sky but got a couple of interesting shots. These two were both taken with the new lens. I'm very happy with it - money very well spent.

                              Like that building shot Ish

I went to the Burghley Game and Country Show today - I actually got offered some work as a photographer there, shooting the dog competitions at the shows.

I took 500 odd shots there, and I think I got a couple of good-uns - there were horses, dogs, birds and all manner of shootings and fishing things, all-in-all a good day out.
