    Thanks Ampanman.

Few more from me. Didn't do so well at Petra - I found it hard to make shots of buildings carved out of mountainsides particularly interesting (though they are mind blowing when you see them). I think its because there's a lack of depth. Site was too busy for panorama's too. Anyhoo here are the highlights (and Dana Nature Reserve at the end).

Stunning scenes Ish. Really quite spectacular. Particular highlights for me are the busy shop, the b&w shot of the pyramids and Cairo, sunrise over Mount Sinai, the camel on the mountain, the horse on the beach, the sheep in the desert, the second portrait, and the first and third shots in Petra. I also particularly like the caption to that shot of the Petra Treasury. Great work!

Ish, as others have said, those are some really special shots, awesome in the true sense of the word!

Some not-quite-so-exotic shots from my local band haunt last night, this is a friends band called My Preserver, who are extremely good:

        Few more here

Couple more from me. I really like the black and white one. One of my faves.

And thanks to everyone for the kind words.

Funkydan - quite like the blue one.

Ish - absolutely stunning stuff - very impressed. Commented on some on flickr, but will visit some of these later ones.

Dan - the guys in the band remind me of someone with the eye makeup, but can't place it.

First time I've been able to get out for ages with the camera (pesky work and 6 day weeks !)

Wowz, Garf. Those are pretty spectacular, particularly the one with the car and the birds. The sky is amazing. Great work, seriously.

How'd you light it and how many shots did you take to get the birds in it properly?

Ish, that black and white of the cobbles (wall?) is very nice indeed.

Dan, does the venue you shoot not have any decent lights? All your shots seem very dark, I don't think it's the exposure but more the fact that there is no interest from the lights.

Garf - love that shot with the car and the birds - it really is quite stunning! What are the two structures in the other shot...random beach art or something perhaps?

Al - yup, the lighting in my venue leaves a lot to be desired, I'm sort of used to it by now I don't think the shots are that 'dak' () though as it's still perfectly easy to see what is going on in the shots, but what I wouldn't give for some more lights in there. I'd love to see some back lighting, and some footlights too, but the money just isn't there for the club. If they had the cash I'm sure they would improve/increase the lighting.

Thanks for all the comments guys - it's a real compliment coming from you all, given the quality shots you post up.

In terms of the technicalities of the shot, I have to admit a lot of my stuff is luck rather than judgement, but for this shot I metered off of the sky, and then recomposed on the car (think that's the right term), and also used the pop up flash to light the car (really should get a proper flashgun), as it was coming out too dark initially. I shot this handheld as I couldn't be bothered to go back for my tripod.

As far the birds, about 2 minutes earlier, some old guy had emptied a bag of bread on the other side of the car, and the birds went crazy for it. I have some other shots with a better angle of the car, but no birds in, and I felt the birds made the shot. Took about 20-30 shots before the birds ate all the bread and cleared off.

                    Sorry for the lengthy description...

Dan - the structure in the other one is a pair of metal steps going over a sea wall (into the mud..)

Dan - I was thinking about your lighting issues in that venue.

I wonder if it would be possible to use some off camera flash to help. Attach a shoe mount flash it to the end of a monopod and poke it into interesting positions. Just a thought and possibly completeply impractical.

That's a good idea. If you're on good terms with the venue, you could get an SB-800, stick it somewhere fun and trigger it remotely. The possibilities with that are just mental actually. A lot of bands aren't fans of flash photography while they're playing, but it wouldn't hurt to give it a shot. As long as you ask beforehand, yknow.

Ish, Garf, lovely shots, thanks for posting.

Though I've been taking pictures with an SLR for years I've just not got the eye for the arty shot, my limit is something like Ish's frontal shot of Petra - though probably not as good, just nice clean 'snaps'.

Really enjoy looking at everyone's pictures though. This and the Japan travel thread are my favourite by a country mile.

Just had a 10 minute play with the new Canon G10 at lunch time. What a camera. Does make me wonder whey we bother with DSLRs though as it can do 90% of what a DSLR can.

Minimum aperture seemed to be f8 though which seemed stupidly large. Really liked the immediacy of all the controls. ISO and exposure compensation both have dedicated dials on top. I know my DSLR has pretty much the same for exposure but I'd love to be able to roll the ISO instead of having to press a button first.

They expect to have 5D MkII's in stock by the end of the month. The guy said I could have one before December if I put a 50 quid deposit down now. Mighty tempting but I have no money
