Winky, those are beautiful. It'd be amazing if you could get more depth of field on some of them, but I know that's very difficult with such a tiny subject and a telescopic viewpoint!

Pete, that's incredibly aggravating, isn't it? I've had a few of my shots appropriated in the past and I find it incredibly violating. I'd probably say yes as long as they asked beforehand, but just brazenly taking stuff marked as All Rights Reserved is actually illegal. So don't feel bad about asking for either money or it to be taken down. It's totally within your right.

Rossco, I like those top two. Nice, graphic and simple.

Haha, the one with the Robin's quite cute. A bit dark, but interesting background. The one with the dog's almost there... Have you got any alternate frames of that?

It's annoying but I'll let it go, to be honest I just like my hits ticking up on Flickr even though they mean nothing (39,406 hits and counting!).

And look at this set! - http://www.flickr.com/photos/powerpi...7607996040207/
Chipmunks and Starwars, the last one is all kinds of awesome!

I seen those a few days ago I think, did someone link to them on here already? They are awesome though!

So I got zero useable shots from this morning out in the garden but went out again for a bit just there so looking through them all now for anything interesting.

A few more shots from the garden today. Quite happy with these ones actually.

Really need to start learning how to use the camera properly though as I'm just totally making this up as I go along with the settings!

How come on some peoples Flickr account, you can't look at the image in the various sizes? I always want to look into more detail at an image but sometimes can't!

Rossco, you can alter your account prefs to either allow people to view all sizes or not (you might not want just anyone to be able to view/download your large images). With my account, only contacts can see all sizes/download images

I took a nice portrait of my friend Eleni today at work. I was photographing Brendan McFarlane giving a Q&A about the film Hunger, and was hoping to take a portrait of him, but he had to run off to the airport. I was all psyched up to take a portrait, so I got my colleague to stand in.

Just imagine a grey-haired Irish republican in her place.

Went to a beach in Norfolk and spent much time frolicking and taking photos.

Just mucking around when I should really be going to bed. Not a particularly good picture, but managed to get the timing about right.

I like this portrait anyway Mag - good stuff. I'd rather not imagine the Irish man in her place if that's ok though

Sorry James, bit tricky to see what this is! Have you dropped an ice cube into a glass of water? I thought it was a vase at first! Do you have an uncropped or portrait version of the shot as I'd love to see the water splashing out in full

That is what it is, yes. Unfortunately, the time I had the timing right was also the time the camera wasn't quite in the right place, so I didn't get enough of the splash above the glass.

Had a look but couldn't find where to do it! Doesn't matter anyway!

I ordered some macro filters from eBay, 1, 2, 4 and 10 times magnification so I'll see how they go!

That'll keep me going til I save up for a good macro lens, which I have no idea about! Was looking online and it really is confusing! They are generally more expensive than zoom lenses aren't they?

If you do want to change those prefs, in the top right of the Flickr page, it'll say 'signed in as Rossco' (or whovever). Click on your Flickr name there, and in the next page that opens up, click on where it says 'Privacy & Permissions', and change what you need to there

Macro lenses have generally fixed focal lengths, known as a 'Prime' lens. Usually the quality of (for example) a fixed 100mm macro lens is going to be better than a zoom lens at 100mm - although at the top end of the market a zoom will be better than a mid-range prime.

It's difficult to say if they are generally more expensive as there is so much out there, but you are looking at a good few hundred quid to get a decent one. The Best Lens Of All Time Bar None, aka the Canon 2.8 100mm, is going for £419.99 on onestop-digital. I've yet to use a lens that's better or, surprisingly, more versitile. The great thing about prime lenses is it forces you to think about composition since you have to 'zoom with your feet' - I find I tend to take better composed shots when using a prime.
All done with the Macro Lens Of Maximum Awesome:

Does anyone know a good online place to shop for cameras at cheap prices? I'm looking for a Nikon D40, but they're currently being replaced by a new model, so none of the big high street brands near me have it in stock, and Amazon had it for £250, but today bumped up the price to £300. Moments before I was going to buy it. Gits.
