If your subject is close enough and the flash is decent (as I'm sure it must be on a G9) then I should think that on-board flash is fine for filling in. The only time I've ever really used it has been on-board to be honest.

The main advantages for me of speedlights over on-board are that you can use them off camera (with some sort of transmitter/receiver setup) and you can also angle them to bounce off the ceiling etc. Just much more versatile. Also they are obviously a lot more powerful too.

Saw Animal Collective last night. They were ace.

BTW, the colours in this look wonky in anything other than Safari or Firefox 3 with the colour management plugin. Grr boo hiss.

Sorry for the double post but I've been going through the holiday shots from the U.S. last month and found this one - can't believe I never posted it here as it was one my fave pics from the whole trip. It's a place called Mirror Lake in Yosemite N.P. and it was just stunning. The snow was melting in the park when we were there, so there was quite a lot of movement in the lake hence the muddied waters (when the water's still, it reflects like a mofo ), but I still think it's beautiful nonetheless:

          Best viewed LARGE!

I like the idea Spags - I'm not completely convinced by the framing though with this one.

Definitely try some tighter framing and some slightly longer exposures so you get some motion, and try to move with the subject so you get sharp focus point main subjects and motion backgrounds - basically, try loads of different stuff and post the best ones

Definitely Pete - it's great to see a lot of new people posting inspired by the rest of us - long may it continue.

Really nice ones Pete and Dan. Oh, and everyone's been awesome lately. So go buy yourself a cream cake or something.

I went down to Kenwood/Hampstead Heath today with a friend who let me borrow a couple of his lenses.
