They switched aircraft with Heathrow for the day (normally it's a 777 for brum) to celebrate Birmingham Airports 70th anniversary.

Thanks, I think the light is better in the latter 3 shots as it was 2.5 hours later. Also taken from a different area.

Nice coast shot btw, works well

There were rumours we were going to get one at MAN on 7th but didn't transpire, instead we got a Singapore Airlines Mega Ark, nice but not the same cachet as a 380.

Good shots by the way, like 'em.
I know what you mean about the first couple of shots, I always shoot with exposure comp on at least half a stop, maybe a full one +/- depending on conditions.

Anybody got any tips that can help me, since I got my G9 I've really struggled getting the exposure right.

Pictures that look light enough have loads of white clipping and if I get rid of that I end up with very dark and then grainiar pictures.
I never had this problem on my 400D, any tips would be appreciated.

HaHa - Do you mean stuck pixels, that appear red or green ? I get these sometimes, but generally on longer exposures or in dark shots with a high ISO.

I think they are pretty much unavoidable on most DSLR's.

I just clone/repair them out in PP, but it is a pain at times.

I've read that you can run some software to 'remap' the pixels, or get it repaired by Nikon, but personally, I'm not fussed about either of those options, so will continue with the repair brush in Aperture

This is part of the "fun" of small sensor cameras! The chip on the 400D had much (much) more surface area than the G9 has, so it's able to capture more detail, especially in the shadows and highlights.

What this means is that you have to be more discerning about what you photograph with the G9. Look before you leap! If you're shooing in the midday sun, the sky will be much, much brighter than your surroundings, so try and avoid it. If you shoot away from the sun, then the sky will be a bit darker, and you'll get a more even exposure. Go out in the mid-afternoon for some even better light.

Make sure you shoot on manual, and check the histogram when you review your shots. If in doubt, go a 1/3rd or 2/3rds of a stop darker, because it's easier to pull details out of shadow areas than it is to get it out of the clipped highlights. Make sure you shoot in RAW so you have the maximum latitude for adjustment. Ideally, though, you'll get it right in camera, but that'll take practise. Have fun!

That's what I thought it probably was, but thought I'd better check to see if there was some magical technique I wasn't aware of to stop the clipping

Have any of you Canon using gents ever accidentally moved the focus ring on lenses whilst in auto mode? I'm talking specifically about lenses with the older, non-ring USM motor (where the end of the lens spins as it focuses). Was attaching a lens hood to one of my lenses and accidentally rotated the focus ring, and now I'm paranoid that I've done some damage to the motor or the gears inside...

I wouldn't about it too much, if it starts to make a grinding sound then it'll be a issue.

I've done it loads with my 50 1.8 (MK 1!) and never had a problem. Touch wood... The 1.4 on the other hand... that's a really badly made lens. Beautiful glass, but as delicate as a butterfly in a bullring.

Haven't been here much of late due to settling in a new country etc.

Anyway, great work all round as usual. Some lovely stuff (lots of pages to work through).

Taka, I wouldn't worry about it, I'm sure they are built to take some punishment... fingers crossed!

I did it loads with the crappy pre-IS 18-55 kit lens, and that doesn't appear to have any problems, though I really didn't care much for that lens anyway.

Thanks for your insights, I can rest a little now knowing that.

That's a top lens, Dan. I'd hold off for a bit, though, because they announced an updated model a couple of months ago.

It says it's shipping in November, so see how much it ends up going for. Warehouse Express have it at RRP, but I bet it'll go down pretty quickly after it's released. And you might be able to pick up a bargain copy of the original one instead. Check Fixation's second-hand listings, as good quality 2nd hand stuff tends to pop up there.

Looks like a monster - is that the old one, or the newer model that Nikon recently released ?

You looking at doing some wildlife\sports shooting with that beast ?
