Red Deer by Jamie-Davies, on Flickr

      That's a nice photo Spatial.

Really like the way you have captured the whole of the Stags body inbetween the foliage.

The only fault I can find with it is the trees in the background, which seem to be blurred.

Fake edit: I hasten to add that I rarely take photo's (other than of the family), so it (your photo) is far better than anything I could do.

        Thanks for the kind words

Tbh I wasn't overly happy with the shot myself because the lighting was rubbish at the time (it was the last hour of daylight on a very overcast day), and I couldn't get as close as I would have wanted because of the limits of the lens I had at the time, alongside the fact that it's rutting season and the big fella really, really didn't like us being so close to his harem of lady deer. If I'd dared to get any closer I ran the very real risk of being being attacked and gored (male deer fight to the death during rutting).

Plus, if you read a guide on how to get a good photograph of deer we basically broke every rule - including being down wind of him. Hence the intense stare

As a result it took a lot of saving and post-processing work to get it how it turned out, so any positive comments are very greatfully received.

It is a belter of a shot. To even get close enough for the shot like this is good skills!

Fault? We intentionally blur backgrounds out of focus using shallow apertures - that's not a fault it's intent.

It's a nicely framed shot Jamie, if perhaps a little over-sharpened (which I assume is one of your "saves").

Well it shows how much I know about photography, as I dont understand any of your first sentence!

Quick question for you all... do you ever get prints of this stuff done?

I just moved into a new flat and want to get some enlargements of my digital photos to occupy some of the walls.

Yeah, I've had a few A3 and A2 size prints done via Photobox. Also had calendars, jigsaws, t-shirts and mugs from them. I don't really rate the t-shirt stuff, but the rest is of decent quality.

Always had a very good experience through DS Colour Labs in Manchester who are also worth looking at.

Thankyou for the advice over the camera questions earlier. This isn't an urgent "need" so we have plenty of time to look over the options available at present and I was personally thinking dropping ?2K on a camera might be a little overkill too. My girlfriend wants to go professional with the photography but her skills aren't just limited to that as she is a great artist and the 2 come together frequently so it's tricky finding that inbetween stage and what will be appropriate.
She currently has a Nikon D40 and a pretty cool lighting kit as well as a mini lighting kit so a step up from the Nikon with more variety of lenses sounds more ideal to me anyway.

Back to current topic - Photobox are very good and I recommend them highly. In April I made a photobook on their site for my Dads birthday only when we received it one of the pages had a slight rip in it. It wasn't a major issue and we intended to get a reprint of the book. We forgot about it for months...5 months in fact but they still honoured the issue and gave us a refund to then make a new photobook. Was ideal for us so we changed the photos that didn't scale up too well and changed a few photos for newer ones (added photos of the recent kittens) but we also took advantage of the 2-for-1 offer and had another book made for our Mum

Wow, this thread has sprung to life again lately !

Some great stuff in here from all of you. Especially like the beach flag shot from GT, the fish from Marty, Walkies and the deer shot from Spatial and that last one from Rossco.

Another vote for Photobox here, although I have always noticed a slight greenish tint to any B&W shots I have had printed.

I am looking to get some of my B&W stuff printed up soon, and have been looking at The Print Space - bit more money, but they are meant to be very good for B&W stuff..

I'm hoping to get out with the camera again soon, life and work have been taking over of late, so no time for photography, flickr, any of that stuff.

Couple of random shots from various locations including Essex, London & Hong Kong..

I would start with Nikon D300 and see how your girlfriend gets on with that. There's not much between it and a D700 in all truth, apart from the full size sensor and attendant benefits.
