Yup, and a tripod helps your own shake, but not the target! I had a couple of nice shots lined up the other day only for a painful 10 minute wait for the wind to drop to nothing... and even then they're a tiny bit blurry. Maybe I need one of those wind cheater things you see on the beaches at Skegness.

I've found holding the subject can help. In blustery weather I've sometimes set up my tripod, got the shot right then held the subject just out of view to steady it and taken the photo with my remote.

Also - using the flash (even in bright weather) can help "freeze" the movement. But then you lose the natural light.

Is there anyone else here who I could add as a Flickr contact? Always interested to look at other peoples work, as everything is inspirational/full of tips for rank amateurs like me.

cavalcade on Flickr if you want to add me. And as suggested I Pro'd the account

I've got a little table top tripod which works well, makes it slightly more possible to grab those quick macro shots if there's something you can dump the tripod on.

Ended up with an LX2 for my compact camera, although it's high ISO performance is poor I couldn't resist the 28mm widescreen setup which is quite impressive for a little camera. Time will tell whether it was the right decision over the F30.

You have some great and interesting shots up now. I think you are a natural.

I dunno. I post a lot on another forum (which had a photography thread), and I got quite disheartened, as I was getting torn to shreds. So it's nice to hear some positive comments! I like this thread better

I sometimes think I'm getting it, but then I have the "top Flickr photos" which show on my default google homepage, and every time they cycle round I just get depressed....

I know what you mean. Some of those pro quality, processed to high heaven shots on Flickr make me want to cry as well. The trick is effective PP, I think, as technique plays a role but Photoshop can make something drab look amazing.

On a side note, I just checked Flickr's main page and it said that there were 3,622 pics uploaded that minute. Wow.

I've added you to my list (Capn Kroaker). You've got some nice stuff on there.

I love what you've done to the OSCar synth. Very nice.

I'd love to see a before and after of some of the best shots on Flickr. I'm always interested to see how much was managed through lighting and camera control and how much through the post processing.

Just added you - you should get a message (top right) with my details if you wish to add me

If you feel like adding your photos to a group then I recommend the following:
Hello and welcome to TWTME. Please see our discussions for our current themes. We ask those of you who post into our group pool to please take a moment and comment on one other photo you like. Thanks :) Please do not forget to make an actual comment on one photo after posting in our group pool. Not just the copy and paste HTML alone. Thanks :-) The World Through My Eyes

I've been on Flickr for about a year now and this is by far the most friendly group that I've found. You probably won't find any technical advice but it's rare you get a negative comment.

The top Photos on Flickr are great, I love browsing though them. Can be depressing but on the rare occasion you get a shot displayed it's pretty awesome!

I know the feeling. I try and compete against myself. I know I'm a beginner but after a year of doing photography for its own sake its great to look back to see how I've improved (I think I've improved anyway!).

I've taken, literally, hundreds this weekend but nothing has quite worked. Bah. I've got a specific black and white tree shot in mind that I want. But I need to find the right tree in the right location. I spent the best part of the afternoon hunting for it. No luck.

This was the best of a bad bunch to be honest:

You don't need a tripod for macro work if anything they just get in the way, you just need to stop the action, meaning a reasonable shutter speed.

None of my macro stuff has been done with a tripod: http://www.flickr.com/photos/martypg...7594215855068/

And I've added you to my contact list cavalcade
