Get out with that camera ET - look forward to seeing some cool shots.

Its a grim day where I live today so I think any photography I do will have to be of the creative tabletop variety.

Great shots, Alastair! Good to see that L glass being put to good use. The candid/portrait is

Do people jump out of your way now, when they see the pro and his camera coming?

In other news, I just bought a flash unit for my Canon. I'ts been an eye opener for sure as I didn't realise just how much of an impact bounced and fill flash can make. Indoor images just pop like never before. Now I know why photjournos have flashes permanently attached to their camera bodies.

Alastair - which version of the 70-200 is that? Fantastic shots.

I don't know whats happened to my photography recently, it's not that I've lost interest but I haven't actually picked up my camera in months. I've probably taken less than 20 shots this year.

They really increase your flexibility - I bought one last month for the Nikon and its become a permanent addition to my camera bag. If you're flash doesn't have a built-in diffuser I recommend getting one - very useful.

Woke up in a bit of a down mood this morning but picked up my camera and took a few shots of nothing in particular and it really cheered me up. Daft as it sounds I really like to hold my camera!

                  Ish,

You are right about flexibility it's just the pop that amazes me at the moment. I now know how the pros get such contrast and rich colours. They use a flash and Photoshop!!

I also enjoy holding my 30D though a 1D mk III would feel damned nice as well no doubt.

I don't think this is the best shot in the world by a long, errr, shot but I love seeing the pollen on the flower.

I'd fancied doing a bit of urban photography today - wanted to get out and about locally and get some shots of things falling to bits (its a classy neighbourhood I live in). Its tipped it down though.

Ended up doing some "household macro". This is probably the pick of the bunch (with a bit of cropping for wallpaper-ness).

                          Ish,

                          That looks superb.

Also, I need to pick the brains of this threads finest regarding flash photography. As stated, I have recently purchased a flash unit so now have many questions regarding the best way to setup my camera. As I understand it, when in TV or AV modes (Canon) the camera acts as if it is a normal exposure and doesn't compensate for the flash. Obviously this may result in an overexposure if using a combo of wide aperture and slowish shutter speed, especially if indoors.

When in P mode, it does compensate for the flash and adjusts accordingly. Upping the shutter speed is the most obvious example of this. Now, I have read that M is the way to go in terms of flash use as the camera just plays dumb, leaving it up to you to adjust the exposure either in camera or in flash, until you get it right.

So what is generally considered the best way to dial in the correct exposure? Should I be using FEC on board the flash or should I just use EC and let the flash fill in the blanks...... but

EDIT: I think I may have nailed it using M. I just used dialed in FEC via the dedicated button on my 30D (you learn something new every day)

Anyone else noticed that Flickr have 'finally' changed the slide show format, bigger images now but I'm missing the speed adjustment by seconds, fast-medium-slow doesn't do it for me. Also, it goes crazy slow now as it's trying to DL larger versions of the shots.

Good idea but badly implemented so far I think.
