Royal Mail Strike - Quick Question?

Thats just it isn't it, Intially the strikes were fine, couple of days here and there I can respect but a week ?

Isn't this just going to ensure teh downfall of RM, anyone who relies heavily on them will find another company to deliver for them taking more money out of an ever shrinking income and they will have to make cuts etc becasue they A) wont be the same amount of work B) not enough Income to cover wages

Think of the folks who need new bank cards it takes long enough

Me too - massively shot themselves in the foot now - I think the clever thing for any of them with half a brain is to walk through the lines and show they're willing to work.

A week off work unpaid is a big deal if it was me - If they phoned in sick today they could get paid and be off

Ive been behind the postal guys as Im all for unions but this has gone too far for me It is going to affect getting my disability next week and being able to pay carers. Not recieving PGR4 is bad enough but a whole week leaving me in the lurch really is talking the pee.

This is a mixture of truth, half-truth and outright lies.

Some of the points raised here by RM are valid, but they aren't true of every office. The points regarding exaggerated overtime claims is the main example. When and where this does go on (and in some places it does), it's entirely down to poor local management that does nothing to prevent it at best, and encourages it at worst.

In fact, the managers themselves are some of the worst offenders. There is rarely a manager in the office when I finish my walk even though they are suppose to have at least one manager on site until the office shuts at 1400. Naturally there are individuals who, knowing there's nobody to disprove them, will exaggerate their overtime claims for example. The managers know it goes on but they won't say or do anything in case they lose the opportunity to sneak off early.

Some of the other claims are complete lies. If we really are supposed to get 'free' overtime for Easter Saturday and Christmas then Royal Mail owes me a lot of back pay, because I've never had it! The same goes for this supposed extra money triggered by an increase in mail volumes. I've never heard of such a thing.

As I said before, I'm not taking any side on this as I can never know all the facts, but I do believe the CWU is letting down their members badly. Calling for a week strike is such a bad idea imo. Plus of that list of 'Spanish Practices' on the Guardian website, every single one the CWU disagree with. I can't believe that the RM are that bad that every single one is wrong.

Some of the answers from CWU are pretty poor:

RM Inflexibility: going home early one day but claiming several hours' overtime when work goes a few minutes over the shift time.

CWU: Under the job and finish arrangement, postal workers are allowed to go home early if they have finished mail deliveries. Arrangement has the backing of RM chairman Allan Leighton.

You get the feling that if the RM said the Sun rose in the East and set in the West that the CWU would disagree with them.

and this is where this kind of position gets very difficult, you have 2 sides deeply entrenched in a point of view, neither accepting what the other says and both unwilling to back down due to loss of face.

hard to see any way that both sides can walk away from this happy and with their 'face' intact.

This really is getting annoying now, 4 days of post in 2 weeks is totally unacceptable in my opinion. I accept that the posties have rights and so forth but to disrupt everyone for almost 2 full weeks is just not on.

I have 4 games on their way to me which will now be held up for another week not to mention my new credit card and replacement bank card.

I just hope that hey sort this out as quickly as possible so that the post can get back to normal
