Yeah, not my wedding, just a guest for the full day. I'd say it is going to be quite formal but they haven't specified on the invite.

If they haven't been specific turn up in a shell suit. Take the invite with you and if anyone says anything just produce it from your pocket, tap it with your index finger, then tap your nose with your index finger and just walk off.
It won't matter by that time anyway, as they'll already think you're a cock for not wearing a tie

Totally acceptable, shirt is OK, you could get away with a T-shirt if you want to look like Simon Cowel or some brash out there .com on the edge type of guy - with trainers would be pushing it though.
You could go in a psuedo fancy dress, say Del Boy, with a lovely-jubbly gold D necklace. Sweet.
Whatever people wear at weddings all the other people will be comparing themselves to each other, be that clothes, cars or even the drinks they buy. Got to love weddings for some real bitch fests, even better if you don't know many people there. just don't insult the brides mother - or her hat.

These people are going to great expense to feed you, entertain you and make you a part of what is, to them, one of the most important days of their lives.
It's not about you, so I'd say give them the respect to wear a tie as you're going all day.
Heck, we all know that you'll be doing a "Rambo" with it on your head by the time the disco's in full swing!
