The government look like they'll give you £2000 for your car when trading in for a new one. You could end up getting a fairly nice, brand new small car for dirt cheap if you trade in the cheapest old banger you can find.
Also looking at subsidising electric and petrol backed electric (not prius')by up to £5K

I don't see why they should give £5k of "my" money to people that will just use fossil fuels in a different place (the electricity has to come from somewhere and most electricity comes from fossil fuels so where's the benefit?)
Instead why don't they give me £5k towards my electricity bill which comes from 100% renewables - Ecotricity pump loads of money back into building renewable infrastructure, so it's not cheap, but I feel it's worth it so I can tell my children I didn't rape their planet quite as much as I could have done.
Stupid government twerps.

Besides, about 30% of our power generated is clean and that should rise dramatically with the new wind farms that are being build and that'll rise more when the new nuclear stations are built.

I'm always complaining about car tax full stop. It's a pointless tax that penalises the poor and the people that barely use their cars and has no affect on rich people for whom it's a drop in the ocean compared to their yearly car spend. What do I suggest once it's gone? Increase fuel tax so that it's taxed on mileage. My car is really cheap to tax because it's before a certain year, but in reality, it should be taxed more because it's a fuel guzzling monster. The only reason it might not be a stupid tax is that it brings a measurable minimum income almost guaranteed that they can count in advance.

Reading the posts about speed cameras, and have to ask is it really that bad these days? I mean, they will screw you for doing less than 10mph over the posted limit? Yakumo and I were moaning about driving here in Japan, but at least we don't live in fear of cameras.
They exist of course but not on the scale as seen in the UK. And certainly not in built up areas, with average cameras trying to trip you up. I know Clarkson was making jokes about them during his Top Gear GT-R run last year, but I have seen few in my time here. And anyway, it's legal to buy detectors that just happen to warn you of local patrol cars, police speed traps and cameras.
With that said, I try to stick to the limits as much as possible as I value my licence as a mere six points can result in a suspension here. Newly licensed drivers can lose it if they incur more than three points during their first year. Ouch.Last edited by Richard.John; 17-04-2009, 01:55.
