weigh ins for most fighting are purely done in advance as when fighters cut down to make weight on the day they massively dehydrate and this significantly increases the possibility of brain injury, I believe its not possible to fully rehydrate the noggin in a few hours.

I hear the arguments about big fighters but guess that's preferable to dead ones.

Yeah, I had a pro Muay Thai match last month and the weigh-in was 24 hours before - I cut about a pound in the sauna and didn't eat or drink for a while before. I thought I'd managed to rehydrate myself; I felt good and wasn't thirsty, but as soon as the bell rang and I started fighting I felt absolutely knackered. Ended up getting my arse kicked (literally) and losing to a unanimous decision. Now I know that being even slightly dehydrated really affects your performance, and that it takes a lot more than you'd think to rehydrate properly. Some pro fighters cut half a stone in the sauna!

decent enough card for UFC 99, first bout was quite good with the Mohawk'd brit putting up a good show, next couple of bouts a bit technical and duller then the lanky welters, 2 decent hevyweights and the main event all pretty good.

not too good with names but what a freaky welter coming in at 6'3", last time I recall that was an early Hitman Hearns.

I enjoyed the Velasquez v Kongo fight from all that were shown.

Velasquez took some BIG shots to the chin at the start of each round, but recovered well and pretty much dominated when he took it to the ground (which seemed to be his tactic).

Not sure why Kongo did'nt try to keep the fight standing up, as he rocked him a few times with his fists.

Looking at the fight from purely a purely physical standpoint, you'd think that Kongo would win in the first round. Its comforting to see that you do'nt have to be a man mountain to win fights, rather, have the skill and stamina. A solid chin helps tho'!!

the Velasquez fight was entertaining but did show that he's a smallish heavyweight who could get rocked and didn't have the power to put away his man despite his ground dominance.

Couldn't make out Kongo's gameplan at all.

The Crocop fight was a bit of a disappointment. I’m glad he picked up the win but he did look noticeably out of shape and to win via accidental eye poke, that’s not exactly a confidence builder.

Silva Franklin fight at the end though, superb. I think our posts regarding weight cutting were pretty relevant as Wand looked totally knackered going into the second; god knows how he’ll get down to 185lbs if he struggled this badly making 195lbs.

Still, the fans reaction when he raised his arms before throwing that flurry was great, just wish he could bundle that showmanship with a win once in a while.

              Edit:

Browsing the MMA news I just read Tim Sylvia got knocked out in 9 seconds by former boxing champ Ray Mercer.

That’s the second former UFC champ to get turned over in a month.

Yeah, not sure what Congo was thinking. He dropped Velasquez 3 or 4 times but straight after he’d shoot for a takedown instead of following up with punches; surely someone in his corner should have advised him to ’keep the distance and use your reach!’

Fedor vs Josh Barnett for Aug 1st, that should be a good scrap.

'Vitor Belfort could return to the UFC' - Dana White

UFC President Dana White threw a curveball to home plate Saturday when he announced the promotion is eying Brazilian Vitor Belfort to return to the fold to face middleweight champion Anderson Silva in the future.

White commented that when Belfort “has his head screwed on right, he’s a formidable specimen."

Affliction Vice President Tom Atencio confirmed to Sherdog.com Saturday that Belfort will fulfill the last fight on his contract with the promotion when he faces Strikeforce tournament champion Jorge Santiago on Aug. 1 in Anaheim, Calif.
Can’t see Anderson showboating his way through this one. Vitors got incredibly quick hands and if he’s on form I can see him giving Anderson a bit of a beating.

After watching Barnett get interviewed the other week I’m hoping Fedor dominates him - the bloke has to be the most unlikeable guy in all of MMA. Saying that, I bet (to my annoyance) Josh wrestles his way to a boring decision.

so UFC 100 is available free to air on sky

looks like this is a one off deal while they tie up a long term one with a 'proper' channel. looks like some good stuff to record as well to catch up on the best old UFC ring battles.

                    good news.

I was actually wondering what will happen to the UFC events now that Setanta have bit the big one.

Hopefully if Sky pick up the rights they wont make them PPV...no way I can justify £15 to watch them
Personally I'm hoping for Bravo to get them back or Virgin 1 (Seeing as V1 have Ultimate Fighter)

                          433, Racing World.

It's free but you won't be able to watch if you're with Virgin.

As an exciting bonus for British fans, Sky channel 433's coverage will begin at 9pm on Saturday with all five episodes of the UFC's Top 100 Fights.
                          Sounds like a good night.

Cheers. That's a lot of ufc! I'm out so can't watch it live, though - gutting!!

Just realised I'm out with my relatives this weekend as well & no sky plus means I'm stuck with just the DVD recorder & I'm damn sure I'm not going to be able to fit everything onto a DVD

Looks like it will either be the top 100 fights or the event itself for me.
Think I'll get the top fights & then source the event later.

If you don't have Sky there is a free live stream for UK & Ireland at uk.ufc.com.

Not reall fussed about the 'main event' tbh but looking forward to Bisping tearing up Hollywood Henderson. Dan has a great engine and you can never rule him out but I just think Bisping will take his opportunity and continue to move up the rankings.

                                UPDATE

Well I was wrong - respect to Henderson that was some performance - what a KO and the follow up punch, ouch!
