Ive had my 2g since launch day and its only in the last2 weeks its started to look tatty (i had to pry the case off to repair the speaker & volume button which were both broke, thus denting the metal case and mullering the plastic cover at the bottom) but the screen is in perfect condition still been well looked after though.

Also when i spoke to orange, the guy said if you take out there standard insurance plan for phones your covered as normal too, no extra special covery plan just because its an iphone. Dont know what O2 are like on broken phones but orange are diamond, always have a next day replacement with minimal fuss. Good to know if your clumsy.

I just have a hard back case on mine and thats it. I just make sure I don't put it in a pocket with keys etc.

As for jailbreaking - sbsettings - the app that makes it all worthwhile

Don't bother with a screen protector though, they make it look sh1t and worse than any scratches will. I've had a couple of iphones now (upgraded from the original to 3g) and neither of them have looked worse than my sister's with a screen protector on it with a few scratches. Who cares if it looks mint underneath?
I should say that for MY iphone I was talking more about shielding the rear end as opposed to the screen!

As for the ringtones, this might be a silly question but seems worth asking before I click that link...but in iTunes there is a right click and "convert to ringtone" option...will that actually work?

EDIT: LOL upon LOL that link actually confirms exactly that! Cheers.

I'm trying to set an MP3 is a ringtone and I've hit a snag. It appears in the Ringtones section of iTunes, but for some reason when I go to the Ringtones tab of the iPhone sync it doesn't show list it and it doesn't sync.

I've tried a file ripped direct into iTunes as MP4 (And renamed to .m4r) as well as converted to AAC from within iTunes (And again renamed to .m4r).

Strange thing is it worked with a small file that I've used in the past for SMS alerts - could it be that the length/size of the full track is unsupported?

EDIT: Looks like that was it.

Oh really? There's a limit to the length? Any idea what it is, because I've done two full tracks as ringtones!

                Cheers.

30secs is the limit for ringtones. There is a way to make them and re-import them into iTunes but in the end I crumbled and bought a cheap ringtone maker app on the PC that does it all for you. Then just copy it across to the phone.

Thirty seconds? Damn, gonna have to re-do my ringtones then!

GarageBand lets you create iPhone ringtones & export them directly to iTunes. I've only ever done it once to create a silent custom ringtone for a specific caller and the iPhone let you set individual contacts as silent.

It's also easy to create ringtones using iTunes but it it won't let you do it if the track is DRM protected. I'd not done it for a very long time and it's let me create one from Radiohead's Exit Music.

As mentioned, there is the time limit though but as I only want a silent tone it only needs to be a second long and I repeat play it on the iPhone when that contact calls me.

Being totally new to the iPhone, this "jailbreaking" stuff is all new to me as well.

Do I want to be doing that, do I have reason to? Any literature anyone can link to that I can peruse and learn?

                        Cheers.

Jailbreaking enables you to do one or more of the following

                          1) install unofficial apps, utils etc...
                          2) install yarrrr'd apps / games
                          3) run your phone on a different network to that which it was meant for

Which of those three you do is up to you...

                          Comment

Absolutely no interest in those things really, unless there's some AMAZING unofficial apps, which I doubt?

I jailbroke my iPhone more so because I wanted to customise certain settings. I was getting increasingly pissed off that Apple wouldn't allow us to change the text message/email tones and their default ones are far too quiet. I also wanted to remove some of the default apps, namely Stocks and iTunes store since I will never use those. Also wanted to keep the possibility of being able to unlock in future should I want to sell the phone on to somebody who doesn't want to use it on O2.

Below is a list of unofficial apps/utilities that I recommend to my friends. Nothing is essential, but IMHO they add significantly to the basic function of the phone and let you use it in ways not otherwise possible (multitasking is a big one):

SBSettings - allows you to quickly turn on and off various features such as WiFi/3G/Bluetooth/airplane mode, adjust brightness and access a calculator/notepad within other apps. Can also add additional info to status bar, monitor what processes are running, hide icons and more. Probably the main reason for jailbreaking for a lot of people, but it's really just a starting point.
RotationInhibitor - ability toprevent screen rotation which can be unnecessary and irritating at times (can be easily turned on/off with an SBSettings toggle)
UAFaker - fake user agent, useful when you don't want to be forced to use mobile version of a site (has SBSettings toggle)
AdBl0ck - block adverts (has SBSettings toggle)
Firewall - can monitor network usage by apps (has SBSettings toggle)

                                iFile - file explorer/manager/editor/viewer
Backgrounder + Kirikae - enables multitasking and quick switching between apps
LockCalendar - display calendar items on lock screen (there are more advanced apps that can show email and other info)
AttachmentSaver - save email attachments to your phone
Safari Download Manager - adds download feature to browser
IpodPop - double-click anytime to see iPod controls rather than launch the iPod app (means you can start playback without quitting an app in the middle of something)
3G Unrestrictor - allows you to use Skype for calls and circumvent other restrictions placed on apps when on 3G connection
YourTube - adds download feature to YouTube app

5 Icon Dock - extra space on the dock
5 Column Springboard - makes better use of the screen as you can fit 20 apps on screen rather than 16 (could add 5 rows too if you want)
MultiIconMover - move multiple icons at once
Stack - shortcut to favourite apps
Orbit - jump directly to a screen (good when you have lots of apps)

I've not even mentioned customisation as I'm not really in to it (I only use a simple add-on called wallpaper for setting the background), these are most of the main things that I use but there are loads more things you can do - add ringtones without any restrictions to get around the annoying limits that have been discussed above is another one.
