All Apple bought iPhones are sim free. Contract bought phones are usually locked to the providers network.

Only Apple can unlock iPhones at the networks request

Finally got an iphone 4, interested in this Jailbreaking lark. Is there such a thing as an untethered jailbreak available yet for 4.2.1? Read about the thethering stuff and it sounds like a giant pain in the backside. Also, how easy is it to do/maintain for someone of limited technical know how like myself?

Hello im using my i phone original 8g ( version 1.1.2 ), pay as you go which was jailbroken and imported from the usa a number of years ago. ive just switched to o2 pay as you go text and web ( £10 over month free texts and xxxamount of data)

i get the free texts fine, but i cant get the EDGE internet to work when ever i click on safari browser it says cannot connect to EDGE as you are not subscribed,

at the top of my screen there is a blank blue box

ive found this post Here are the latest EDGE settings for most of the UK networks:

To get EDGE (gprs) to work:
        · Go to Settings, General, Network, EDGE and add the following

        O2 UK

        · APN address: wap.o2.co.uk
        · Username : o2wap
        · Password: password

problem is when i select settings general and network i only get these options
        VPN ( not confugured> )
        Wifi ( On )
        data roaming (Off)

any idea how i can get this working please ive not tried to add files to my iphone before or connected it to my pc thanks

My username is 'vertigo'. I'm on O2 contract but it might be worth giving a go.

Is there definitely no option there that says something like "cellular data"? That's where all my settings for GPRS, MMS, etc., are, although I'm on the iPhone 4 so I don't know how much it has changed compared to the original iPhone.

Edit: There's a bit of info here.

If your carrier allows you to edit the APN settings or if you have an authorized, unlocked iPhone, you will see one of the following options, depending on your iPhone's operating system:

            iOS 1.x Settings > General > Network > APN

iOS 2.0 or later Settings > General > Network > Cellular Data Network

Unlocking and jailbreaking are two completely separate things, although jailbreaking will allow you to unlock the phone unofficially if you've bought one from a carrier (only iPhones bought from Apple come sim-free and unlocked out of the box as MikeF said).

Jailbreaking allows you to run unsigned applications on the iPhone, i.e. you are no longer limited to just what is in the official App Store but have access to other, unofficial app stores like Cydia with software outside the remit of what Apple normally allow iPhones to do.

Pretty easy. Normally it's a one or two step process, and once it's jailbroken it stays that way, you just can't update to the latest firmware if it hasn't been jailbroken yet.

Hello thanks for the info, its an original iphone imported from the usa and was jailbroken and then unlocked i got it from ebay a number of years ago.

the problem is my phone only has these 3 options under settings-network ,

                VPN ( not confugured> )
                Wifi ( On )
                data roaming (Off)

there are no options for the APN or Cellular settings

I'm currently on a tethered jailbreak with my iPhone on 4.2.1. Had no choice sadly due to receiving a replacement handset with 4.2.1 rather than 4.1 on it.

The experience was a little daunting at first, where a simple reboot or losing power would require you plug the iPhone into a PC or Mac to essentially jump start it.

After I'd loaded all the jailbreak toys I like to have (queue them up to avoid frustration), it's been pretty smooth sailing. I've yet to have any random restarts or run out of power, and I'm nearly always around a PC during the working week so I keep a copy of redsnow and the 4.2.1 firmware on a memory stick just in case I ever need them.

I'm into all the tinkering that comes with jailbreaking, but I know a tethered jailbreak is not for everyone. If you're happy enough with the vanilla stock iOS then I would just wait until 4.3, which has reportedly already been jailbroken successfully.

edit ive found these 2 link that sim to have the similar problem to mine

After wading through the plethora of different O2 Edge settings, I finally got data working on my unlocked 1.1.1 iPhone with a Pay & Go SIM + £7.50 Web Bolt-On. It is important to remember that full EDGE speeds are only available for those with Pay Monthly or SIMplicity SIM cards, so Pay & Go...

If I recall, some iPhones don't allow for their data settings to be changed. I remember reading into the subject a few years ago when I was moving to Japan for a job and wanted to take my iPhone with me.

I don't think there is a fix, short of having the iPhone officially unlocked by original network provider.

Thanks Taka, think I'll just wait til 4.3 hits then. Gives me a chance to get properly familiar with the iPhone's workings before I start tinkering then as well

                          Can someone help me?

I got mugged last night and my 3GS was stolen. I took the opportunity to get a 4 and will get most of the money back via insurance.

BUT I use a Mac and it is still running OS 10.4 - Tiger or something or other.

I can't download the new version of iTunes10 because app you need OS 10.5...

Surely this can't be right? What can I do about this? I now can't use my 4 and still have no phone

On another note - I booted the 4 up using my gf's pc to get it running, but it has been activating for 2 hours and still isn't done. Is this normal?

It can take a while to activate (sometimes)

Consider getting Snow Leopard if your Mac is up to speed. I think it's around £20 or so on Amazon.
