For me: dogs, plain and simple. Their unfailing loyalty, genuine affection, how protective they are over the family and the way they get so excited every time they see you.

As others have mentioned living by the sea. That smell you get every morning and when the stiff breeze that hits you.

Buses. I absolutely love using public transport and the way it keeps you connected to people around you, to and from work, reminding you of the bigger world outside your work.

This Friday my daughter (10) is reading a poem she wrote about the First World War at her school's rememberance service.

Mega proud, she has already been rewarded by the school by having it fowarded to a national competition for poetry.

My Mum and Dad live 350 miles away, they are coming up to attended (it's her birthday at the weekend), so double special.

Theres a family of Swans that I see on an almost daily basis on the river as I walk home from work. This yr all 4 of the young uns managed to survive along with both adults. But as I walked home the other day what did I see from a distance? - 5 young uns!
As I got closer I noticed that 1 looked like a bit of a runt, so I got up close only to discover that it was a young goose that had joined that family! The swans were more than happy taking on this goose as a family member, & while they croaked to each other to reassure each other he'd let out a little 'honk!' every now n then too!!

Then this morning as I finished my shift early thanks to my boss, I walked back along the riverside & there were swans, ducks, gulls, heron, cormerants all over the river & some mixing on the bankside with each other!! It was like they'd all got together for an xmas eve party or something.

                    It really made me smile!

Swans are amazing, I used to walk past a family that lived in a little canal on my way to work each day. They had one signet - I felt like I was watching it grow up, I even saw them trying to teach it to fly for the first time. Eventually the two parents left and the young one was left on it's own.

There was another time traffic was stopped on one of the bridges in Glasgow, the police were out to deal with it - there was a dead swan that had been hit by a car. That didn't cause the disruption, it was the other swan that was guarding the body and wouldn't leave. They seem to form extremely close family bonds.

Yeah something like that happened down here in S. Wales not so long ago. Swans apparently pair up for life, & if 1 dies it affects the living partner enormously, so so much for some peoples ignorant belief that 'all animals are dumb' etc.

I have to say tho that it was nice to see the nippers all surviving this yr, & it was so sweet to see them fostering this little goose as if it were 1 of their own!!

Had eggy bread this morning for the first time in ages. Can't beat it, especially with brown sauce.
