leaving work on the way to the car i nipped into cafe nero for a coffee, my card had 5 of the 9 stamps needed for a freebie, after i gave the guy my money the guy out of the blue stamped the rest of the card for me, i don't know why he did it, but that was nice of him. maybe because i used to go in there maybe 3 times a week, nowadays it's once if that while i try to cut my spending a bit.

Did he write his phone number on the back of the receipt, or wink at you while he was stamping?

haha, no, similar thoughts about his motive did cross my mind, but it was weird he just casually said "might as well stamp the rest of this" in a normal tone of voice, and then did just that, turned back around and carried on cleaning the big coffee making thing at the back of the counter!

A girl gave me some free food at a McDonald's once, along with my order. I didn't realise she was trying to be nice and returned it. I then realised how dumb I was and hoped she didn't get in trouble from her manager. Felt quite guilty.

that reminds me of a few months back when i bought a new jacket in burton, ?30 reduced from ?55, on the way out though i spotted one i liked more and it was slightly cheaper too, so went back to the counter and politely asked for a refund, explaining my reasons (as a customer should instead of throwing it on the counter and grunting "i want me money back" - but that's for the irk thread so i'll drop it for now, i work in retail), anyway, the guy without realising refunded the original price of ?55, i was confused for a sec until i looked at the receipt and realised his mistake, gave him it back and waited for him to run it through properly before buying the jacket i wanted, didn't like the thought of walking off with it and this guy getting in a load of trouble for his till being ?25 down.

She was totally into you, man. What a missed opportunity.

If that happened to me I'd smile weakly as she beamed at me, willing me to ask her out. In an overwhelming fit of shyness I'd blush and stay silent for slightly too long. Then I'd say "cheers," leave the restaurant and never ever go back in case I saw her again.

This was quite a few years ago before life kicked the **** out of me.

My response at the time alternated between the one you described, or just general did-not-give a ****, in a rush to go and waste my time in self destructive pursuits.

I missed a ****load of chances but I try not to be bitter. Sometimes. Honest.

Finally getting to see fireflies. I have missed them every year since I came to Japan, as they only come out for about one week at the start of the rainy season, and they won't come out if it's raining.

Last weekend was pretty much the last window of opportunity, and it rained constantly - on Tuesday evening the weather took a turn for the better so I hopped on a train out to the country and took a chance there would still be some around. There were. Not many, maybe 10-15 on the stretch of river I was watching but it was great to see them dancing around each other in the dark. The other advantage of it being 'out of season' was I didn't have to contend with huge crowds of people trying to see them. Nice, another thing ticked off the checklist.

Unfortunately I found out about some other rare glowy phenomenon in Japan that I am now determined to see, but it seems to be a once in a lifetime chance kind of thing - a blue phosphorescent plankton that illuminates the sea and beaches around Tokushima. I saw pictures and it looks incredible.

I only saw them once in my time in Japan, in some random bit of western Tokyo the ex's boss lived in. Beautiful.

^ Those sound amazing. Haven't seen a firefly since I was a child.

For the first time ever, customs didn't hit me with fees when importing. Thank you, FedEx!

I did a scuba diving course on my honeymoon in Jamaica. That was amazing in itself, but we also did a night dive and it was completely different.

You know the bit in Alien when they're walking into the egg lair with just torches? I was kind of like that as everybody gets their own torch. You see loads of creatures you wouldn't normally see (puffer fish, lobsters etc.) and we finished by sitting on the sea floor in a circle, turning off our torches and ascending to the surface.

As we swam up, bioluminescent plankton lit up in our bubbles and it felt like you were swimming through stars.
We then broke the surface to a calm ocean and bright moon - so peaceful.

That's one of the most amazing things I've ever done.

I did my CV today and a covering letter, never a fun experience.
Mind you better than the inevitable presentation I'll have to do at the interview (should I get one )
