Howiee, what do you make of Epicurus' riddle or the Epicurean paradox? Being religiously inclined, you've probably come across it at some point in your life. If not, here it is:
Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able?
Then he is not omnipotent.
Is he able, but not willing?
Then he is malevolent.
Is he both able and willing?
Then whence cometh evil?
Is he neither able nor willing?
Then why call him God?
I should point out this isn't a loaded post designed to pour scorn over anyones belief in God. People can believe in whatever they like as far as I'm concerned, but I am very interested to know what you make of the ancient Greek philosopher's so-called riddle because the questions it poses are as valid today as they ever were.

I'd offer a smaller amount of credibility to things like the Gospels if they were written by Jesus himself or even within his lifetime but it's like the people who to this day still firmly believe in the words of Saddam etc. It's not first hand information and is skewed to represent a preferred message. I think, people who accept the realities of the world around us and incorporate that into their belief system is fine but I always find it a little bizarre when people take a literal belief in a religions teachings. The church itself has shown in the last 20-30 years alone to have a large willingness to bend it's views and teachings just to maintain popularity.
It's like people who believe Noah's Ark is a true story. It's a story that promotes a God who sanctions genocide, suffering and incest. How could anyone take a literal belief in such a contradictory tale?
That said, I once had a debate with someone who was making the arguement the Earth might not be older than 200 years old because there wasn't anyone living that old to prove it

I had the misfortune to see a bit of the new (bbc 10pm) last night. It was quite disturbing to see people saying things like "It goes to show that if you mess with us, we'll hunt you down and kill you". What's wrong with the court of law people?
It's easy for me to sit here in my ivory tower and be all rational though - if my comrades had fallen I would probably also be all "killing's too good for 'em"
It doesn't take a lot for our species to revert back to survival of the fittest.

I was quite surprised that Sarah Palin didn't get mentioned in the media for her remarks on Twitter ...
Show photo as warning to others seeking America's destruction. No pussy-footing around, no politicking, no drama;it's part of the mission

Well that's exactly it Charles. That's why we have courts of law - so that we're not just lynching people on emotional responses. Not dragging people out into the streets and setting fire to them. Revenge killings just lead to more revenge. More violence. Brutalisation. So something like this, to me, is a real step backwards.

I can understand and respect people having religious beliefs, and we all take meaning from things throughtout nature and nurture, but to come out with a statement like that is some seriously skewed (and a rather ignorant) unstanding of the natural world and how the planet has shaped and formed, to the world we live in.
Its actually FACT - that processes such as landscape erosion (such as the Grand Canyon, formation of rocks to creation mountainous regions, continent shift etc - have taken millions of years to come to fruition, to the way we visably see things today - if you dont agree with FACT, you are really only deluding yourself unfortunately....

Yeah, stick his head on a pike and parade it in the gardens of the White House ...
But it scares the hell out of me that she's considered to be the next in line for the US Presidency. That woman's crazier than a bucket of frogs - Obama may not have lived up to the hype but at least he seems to be reasonably sensible.
