Some pretend gypsies moved in to a plot of land near me about the same time as I moved in 7 yrs ago. I say pretend because their mum was from gypsy lineage but was living in a house and when they came back from a 3yr stint teaching diving in Thailand, they wanted an easy money making scheme somewhere to live, so their mum sorted them out by buying this plot of land and moving 4 static mobile homes on to it, saying 1for her, 1 for her husband, and 1 for each of the two sons. Only 1 son has ever actually resided in the mobile homes. The land was tied to agriculture, but after 10 years, they'll get the right to convert the 4 mobile homes to brick and thus turn 30,000 into 800,000
As far as I can make out anyone can say they are a gypsy and claim all sorts of extra human rights that everyone else doesn't get (right to do whatever they want?)
Anyway, when they applied for planning permission, their direct neighbour supported them because she basically trusted anyone and was willing to give them a chance in life, which is a nice ethos, but the fact that they have moved in and set up homes without planning permission already shows they are outside of the law, so she was rather naively blind imho. The rest of the road spent vast amounts on ensuring the court battle went as far as possible - the first few were won, but eventually overturned when they played the "human rights" card at the high court of justice, as we knew they would, but it least it deters other pretend gypsies from doing the same thing on other similar plots nearby.
She passed away a few months ago and her partner wants to sell the house, but it turns out that when the gypsies moved in and had "kindly" offered to put up hedging (the plots were separated by vast amounts of brambles before) to mark the boundaries, the neighbours didn't bother checking the deeds to see where the hedges should go. So now the remaining partner has checked the deeds and they placed the hedge to grab an extra bit of land. They are now claiming that the deceased neighbour actually said "yes you can have it" and that if the partner wants it back, there will be a fee....
Apart from the drug raid (3 mobile homes used as hydropoinics labs) 3 days before weed was reclassified (lucky!), they have been very quiet, causing no trouble anywhere. Until now.
Only another 3 years till the building work starts. I'm wondering if they will go the "pikey palace" bungalo route for themselves, or if they will take the profit from selling 4 houses.
