When my wife was pregnant, she was addicted to Gourmet Burger Kitchen. Those were good days.

Five guys was nice, but it's all pretty low rent considering it's the same setup as a McDonalds.
We went to Shake Shack a few times in NYC, they are the best ones I've had in a more fast foody place.

My wife's burger recipe is nice, ETC.
Beef, onion, garlic, egg and breadcrumbs (to bind it) all kneaded together then wrapped around the Babybel.
Ultimately, it's always nice not having to cook, though!
An amazing place I stuffed myself at was Angel's Restaurant in Mammoth Lakes, California.

My local butcher does an amazing pork burger. Fine cuts of pork, bacon, onion and caramelized apple in a fairly large meat patty. The local Whetherspoons buys them in but always manages to screw em up somehow, usually by either using not very fresh salads or burning the bun... When I do them myself they're amazing.
I think one of the flaws in gourmet burger joints is that they tend to just stuff as much crap as they can in the bun and it ends up stacked 8" high, simplicity I believe is the key.

2 best burgers were:
CJ's BBQ burger in the grounds of the Hilton on O'ahu (Honolulu) : http://www.hiltonhawaiianvillage.com...ork-style-deli Don't know what magic they used in there, but perfection of flavour and texture. So good I went back next day for another.
Only bettered by:
Cheeseburger in Paradise on Maui: http://www.cheeseburgerland.com/chee...d/lahaina.html
Everything you could want from a burger with an amazing view and a perfect sunset in a very cool building. Sit upstairs if you go. They do little tiny burgers for kids as well, so they can have 2 each
