When my wife was pregnant, she was addicted to Gourmet Burger Kitchen. Those were good days.

For me GBK's menu is too unfocused and they don't nail the basics well enough. There is soooo much variety but at lot if it is a bit 'meh'. Byron is good - always American cheese though. Always.

I like them. But mainly because we can eat there for about a tenner as at family.

Five guys was nice, but it's all pretty low rent considering it's the same setup as a McDonalds.

We went to Shake Shack a few times in NYC, they are the best ones I've had in a more fast foody place.
Johnny Rockets in LA is the daddy! Double up for $1 and free refills on soft drinks AND fries!!!

Went to Byron in Kensington a couple years back when an American friend visited, we both quite enjoyed that despite the price heh. If you're in the US, especially east or west coast, then Smash Burger aren't bad either.

Can no-one make their own one? A good rib eye steak minced with some blue cheese and a brioche bun with crispy lettuce and Tom and onion will beat pretty much any and could be made for less than a tenner

I do, but that's because I'm a Quorn-eatin' vegetarian nancy that relies on fried halloumi instead of meat in my burgers these days. Slim pickings for the likes of me in Five Guys.

My wife's burger recipe is nice, ETC.

Beef, onion, garlic, egg and breadcrumbs (to bind it) all kneaded together then wrapped around the Babybel.

Ultimately, it's always nice not having to cook, though!

An amazing place I stuffed myself at was Angel's Restaurant in Mammoth Lakes, California.

I think mentioning America is kinda cheating tbh...

I didn't set any geographical limitations in my original question, so my rules say it's fine!

In that case, best burger I've ever tasted was in the bad apple in Chicago, superb. (The grizzly Adams burger)

Orkney Islands county show, 2014. The butcher's stall. Calling it a burger is stretching the definition though, it was a steak in a bread roll for ?5.

Bread Meets Bread in Glasgow does great burgers. And delicious caramalised sweet potato chips to go with them. Yum.

My local butcher does an amazing pork burger. Fine cuts of pork, bacon, onion and caramelized apple in a fairly large meat patty. The local Whetherspoons buys them in but always manages to screw em up somehow, usually by either using not very fresh salads or burning the bun... When I do them myself they're amazing.

I think one of the flaws in gourmet burger joints is that they tend to just stuff as much crap as they can in the bun and it ends up stacked 8" high, simplicity I believe is the key.

I used to work in one... The main problem is rubbish burger chefs, so you end up with a soggy mess. The ones I cooked myself were better but give me a Burger King any day. McDs is a last resort if you literally had to crawl to somewhere with "food".

                                2 best burgers were:
CJ's BBQ burger in the grounds of the Hilton on O'ahu (Honolulu) : http://www.hiltonhawaiianvillage.com...ork-style-deli Don't know what magic they used in there, but perfection of flavour and texture. So good I went back next day for another.

                                Only bettered by:
Cheeseburger in Paradise on Maui: http://www.cheeseburgerland.com/chee...d/lahaina.html
Everything you could want from a burger with an amazing view and a perfect sunset in a very cool building. Sit upstairs if you go. They do little tiny burgers for kids as well, so they can have 2 each
