It's utterly grim in this country at the moment.

They should work harder and have 30p meals.

        And shop for value brands.

And keep their consoles switched off.

You should have been alive in the 1970s - that was really grim and makes this current Putin/Russian made depression look like a minor hiccup in comparison.

Just wait till next year and half the 3rd world is starving due to the grain shortage putin has caused, which was all planned and the bigger picture in this conflict. It will effect us massively as well.

It's a bit like being in the 6th circle of hell and saying 'Yeah, but you should see the 7th Circle!'

1970s = oil crisis, 3 day week, power cuts, half the country on strike at one time or another, IRA setting off bombs on the mainland every couple of months and when its not the IRA its the Angry Brigade or PLO. Rampant inflation, UK in so much debt it has to borrow money from the IMF we're probably still paying back, stroppy Labour militants taking over town halls spending money they did not have and resulting in local chaos (uncollected bins, unburied bodies and more strikes).

And the 1970s food............................no avocado pears, no sourdough bread, height of sophisticated home dining meant Matteus rose and Blue Nun wine, shrimp cocktails made with salad cream coloured with tomato sauce, frozen Black Forest gateaux, gammon and pineapple, Vesta freeze dried curry.....it really was hell.

I only just understood this today (I think). Energy prices haven't really gone up. It's just the standing daily charge. So even if you try and not use energy, your bill still goes up. Is that right?

It's both, Charles. There was no excuse to increase the standing charge as it's not affected by the wholesale energy prices, but the energy companies found the prospect too tempting to resist and OFGEN are too toothless/negligent to police the matter. So they increased it in proportion with the energy unit prices.

Southern electrics answer for the daily charge going up was because they had to absorb customers from company’s that went under.
Surely those new members would be paying their own daily charge. I did try and get us to these questions on Faceache but they quickly buried it.

Exactly. This was the excuse that was rolled out everywhere. These companies benefited from a huge increase in their paying customer base so the increase was/is indefensible.

Useless as usual. Basically you get your £400 and at the rates of cost increases it will be gone by Month 3. They're doing nothing about the rates themselves which are the issue so instead of households crashing in Sept/October they will do so in Dec/Jan, the worst period for it.

£600 will be 2 months worth of energy bills... Then what?

It's clearly a bribe for the proles, in the hope they'll drink it and forget about partygate
