The prices in supermarkets go way beyond inflation. One example I noticed was Titan bars (Mars bar clone) in Aldi. Every other week they’ve crept up steadily and over the course of about 6 months they’ve gone from 59p to 99p. That’s almost 70% up!
Something I’ve noticed as a direct consequence of the price inflation is absolutely rampant theft. Aldi have moved to a system where they require the staff to manually check your bags to see you haven’t nicked anything. All the supermarkets are constantly being robbed out of hours, you just drive past and there’ll be a smashed-in door or window. In the last few months, Aldi, Lidl and even Poundstretcher have had boarded up windows from burglaries. Some have replaced doors/windows so much that they’ve just left them boarded over. Shoplifting incidents happen more often than not now - I’m not exaggerating when I say about two thirds of visits somebody will run off with products and the staff will shout “another one, just made off with some meat” or whatever. Or the police will be with somebody outside, turning out their pockets.
To be honest, I don’t know how much longer I can put up with it. I feel like I’m living in Death Wish 3 less Charles Branson.

One thing I took away from this report on Sainsbury's allegedly profiteering from inflation pushing prices up is that it's obviously such a common practice in supermarkets that they've invented the term "greedflation".

Steeling food to survive is another thing but I'm sure those guys aren't steeling to stop themselves form dying of starvation.

Reminds me of when a small village objects to new developments and then years later the locals wonder why the town is dead

Going in the supermarket and robbing the self-checkouts isn't likely to filter down to the greedy owners and impact the shareholder dividends, it's likely just going to get the self-checkout and security team in bother and have them facing a disciplinary for not doing their job or mysteriously finding not as many hours to be offered on their zero-hour contract. It's a real scumbag move that only hurts people at the bottom and makes it so when ordinary working stiffs are in the supermarket they have to wait for somebody to take all the security tags off everything because people keep walking out with it.
