Nigel Farage launches fresh attack over Coutts bank closure - BBC News
The back and forth between Farage and Coutts continues as several notable career racists speak out in his defense. A lot is going into how bad it would be if banks decided who had an account based on their views but that feels like an over reach of the situation here where the Natwest Group hasn't rejected Farage as a customer, they just don't want him damaging the image of Coutts specifically.

I read the entire 42-page document. A few things to know, unfiltered.

      • Nigel Farage has had cashflow under the threshold Coutts normally accept for a customer for some time
      • Coutts did, on reflection, consider that Farage was still "commercially viable", i.e. in a dispassionate way, they could still bank for him
      • Farage had been very public about Coutts banking for him, which is not against their rules but does not seem typical
      • They listed extensive ways in which Farage had campaigned for causes and made public statements that were against their values
      • They felt Farage was a liability due to the above, which could drag them into disrepute
      • They also correctly predicted that if they did this, Farage would probably go public and try to tarnish their reputation
      • Farage was told about this months ago, it was not a "surprise" as his announcement a little while back would suggest
      • Coutts commented that Farage had a mortgage which ended in July, and believed that was the appropriate moment for them to part ways

So, to be clear, it is true that they wanted to terminate their relationship because Farage (and his business, called "Thorn in the Side" - showing how almost comically ridiculous he is) was outspoken about views they felt didn't align with values. However, it's also fair to say that this isn't because Farage holds those views; it's because he's an activist for those views, which isn't quite the same thing.

Also worth bearing mind that Coutts is a private equity firm, which is, at its core, elitist and discriminatory. The idea that this is some sort of "slippery slope" for banking is prepostorous. To say that is like suggesting you'll need to wear a suit for the beach in 6 months because you can't wear swim shorts in a fancy restaurant nearby. The two things bear little-to-no relationship with each other.

Farage, in his typical way, has released just the key details which serve his purposes and make him appear the poor victim of the actions of elitist private equity firm that he chose to bank with, instead of any typical bank. Presumably all the high street ones are too close to milkshake shops.

Prediction: the Tories will keep hold of one or two seats, albeit narrowly.

At this point I kind of view voting Tory akin to voting Trump. It says a phenomenal amount about the voter and all of it is horrid

It does seem odd that they can't, when (1) there are other places nearby doing it and (2) the building isn't listed.

The way I see this is how some people before the US election said:

"You might not be racist, xenophobic or misogynist if you're voting for Trump. But many of the people in his party and administration are, and you know that, and that's not a deal-breaker for you."

It's similar with the Tories. You might like small-c conservatism and the individual right to amass and hoard wealth. But you're dealing with white-collar crooks who are mugging you with private school accent, climate deniers and xenophobes. You might not be those things, but you're voting for people who are, and clearly that's not a problem for you.

Yep, to think about the last few years and actively vote for at least another half decade of such moral bankrupcy and rank corruption is eyewatering

Pretty sure that Coutts can choose who it wants as a customer and Farage will just have spit dummies along with his eight failures to be elected as an MP. In fact, I'd prefer if no more links to this idiot were posted.

I don’t think we can underestimate how right-wing many British voters actually are.

(Also, Tories themselves aren’t all that moderate. I remember the active Tories at university used to idolise the US Republican Party, admittedly that was during the Bush era when they weren’t as box-of-frogs nuts as they are these days.)

I couldn't stomach more Tory years, but I would take Trump in a heartbeat over anything currently on offer here.

well hopefully the 3 byelections dont end up giving us three more Tory's i find it super bizarre that the one their most likely to hold onto is in North Yorkshire, as torries have a 20,000 seat majority there, do the people in this area have stockholme syndrome.

Polls in Uxbridge and South Ruislip, Somerton and Frome, and Selby and Ainsty will test the government’s popularity on Thursday – but local issues are also at the fore

I don’t know how to respond to that.
