Darby got sucked into Gilardino for the first goal, leaving the scorer in space on the wing.

The noises Benetez is making makes is sound like he's going to put a sub-Carling Cup team in the Europa League.
Although there aren't many points in it, having to rely on 3 teams to slip up in the league won't ease the players minds at all and they need to get their form back and get a string of results. Their biggest threat is Man City who (despite their result against us) have been under performing a bit. They could very easily get a long string of wins.
Thoughts on Sunday's game? Arsenal must be overwhelming favourites to win but the players must know that a loss could make things incredibly tough for them. Playing against Arsenal with your heads down is bad news. If you ease off of them and give them space, they'll destroy you. Arsenal suffer when they're tightly marked they'll spend ages passing around the mid field but struggle to produce anything attacking.Last edited by abigsmurf; 10-12-2009, 08:59.

I think we'll beat them mind you, and drop points in the week against the Wigan.Last edited by SharkSkin-Man; 10-12-2009, 10:36.

It's just been another of those "next year" seasons. We've had far too many of them in the last 15 years
Reckon it'll be a draw at the weekend, either that or we'll win then lose to the relegation battling teams in the following games.
Really do hope our fortunes improve, we could be mid-table if the teams below us were performing well each week - which doesn't even bear thinking about.

I think this season needs to be chalked up to experience, annoyingly we'll probably finish strongly but of course it will be too late by then.
I don't think Rafa going is the answer and he deserves the opportunity to turn it around, I'm hoping it will spark G & H to actually put some funds in as now they can see Rafa is not a miracle worker...in the long run it could turn out better in that regard.
Unless of course the owners show their true colours....as it stands I don't think they can warrant sacking him financially and due to the possible player exodus that could follow.
If we'd have won the league last season things could have been so different confidence wise, I think it really knocked the team back being so close. Losing the 'underdog' tag for this season has backfired somewhat!

A loss on Sunday would make it incredibly hard for them to get fourth place, especially if spurs and city both win. Once you're 6 points behind 2 clubs, you simply have to rely on too many results going your way.
Not qualifying for the Champions League would have to mean that Benetez is sacked really. I still think he's never going to win the league, he makes too many over confident decisions in match (how many times has he taken key players off on the basis of a slim lead?) and can't get the consistency needed to grind out the 1-0 tough results.

There would be a massive uproar if Rafa was sacked this season, the majority of match going fans are still behind him as far as I can tell.Last edited by SharkSkin-Man; 11-12-2009, 14:12.

He may have spent his Champion's League win, but he still has an amazing signing coupon to spare and a good few wins over thy mancs and chavs. Personally, I'm williing to give him another season and write this one off as a hiccup not helped by some back luck in, injuries and beach balls etc. Besides, who would take over? Alardyce? Maybe Chavs are too used to dumping managers like a used sponky.

As well as the injuries. We got to also admit that a lot of our players have had very hot and cold performances this season. There are valid points from both anti and pro Rafa camps, but after last season's campaign, I find it hard to just jib him now when the failure is coming from a collection of sources.... and a beach ball.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/foot...ol/8408904.stm - Benitez smashes the criticism from Souness and Klinsmann right back at them
Its excellent how he points out their success, or lack of, as managers. Its becoming increasingly annoying how pundits are becoming more and more sensationalist, especially on Sky. Redknapp is definitely guilty of that, every single game he talks on is the biggest game in the last 10 years.
