Degen has just returned from injury afaik. I think there must be a reason Benitez has bought him, he is an attacking full back.

Maybe he is looking to pack the central midfield and have two wingbacks. I wouldn't worry about Degen being terrible just yet. Give him a bit of time to settle in and get back to his full fitness.

Also, Alonso is about ripe to go I think. Theres no denying the quality of the guy but I just feel that with Mascherano looking very special, Lucas promising good things, Gerrard looking to come back into the middle of the park and Barry eventually moving to Anfield. Alonso was the player who maybe would sit out and he is such a valuable asset to be left sitting around so we may aswell capitalise on the money he could bring to the club.

I will/would be very hard to convince that Barry is in any way an upgrade from Alonso.

See, I used to think the same as you until this season. Whilst there is never any point in arguing the fact he is simply outstanding at distributing the ball, he suffers from not being able to take charge of the central midfield. He isn't that kind of player, granted, but I just think in the Premier League you need more physicality. Which is definitely something Alonso doesn't have, he'll suit the slower paced Italian game where he can maybe get more space to get the ball down and pass it about.

When Alonso was on form for Liverpool he was immense, but last season he regularly failed to make much of an impact in games. I'm hoping in a player like Barry Liverpool will get somebody who can affect the outcome of more games. Barry has been carrying Villa for a long long time, he is a brilliant player, but theres a difference between playing for Villa and Liverpool.

I also think its unfair to judge a player before he has even kicked the ball. If Barry does join give him a couple of months, then see what you think.

Barry is our best player and captain. I think he was the only player to be involved in every England game last season, and he finished the season captaining England, and ahead of Carrick and Hargreaves in the pecking order.

Villa don't need the money, so if you can't afford the asking price (If he's worth that much or not is another matter) tough ****.

Barry is a tidy little player - I like him and I do think he is better than Hargreaves and Carrick (esp Carrick as hargreaves offers something different). I do not think he is better than Xabi though. Xabi has had a hard time I reckon and was getting back to his best - just needed more games.
Barry will cost more than the Monster though!

Barry scores more goals and would give us more options (he can play CM, LB and LM) than Alonso. As much as I love the guy, and on his day there's no better passer in the world in my opinion, I think Barry would be an improvement to our team. If we got Barry then Xabi would just end up wasting away on the bench as he's too good to be doing that, so it'll be best if he goes for his sake as well as ours (while he's still worth decent money).

That said, if we don't get Barry I'd be more than happy for Alonso to remain

So Crouch is pretty much gone? Unless his ego doesn't allow him to take a pay cut I imagine Pompey will ask him to.

I'm really hoping that means Nemeth will be given a chance in the squad. Probably behind Voronin for the first game or two until they realise how **** he really is.

I'm sure he will, he's been brilliant for us, especially over the past couple of seasons. Very sad to see him go but I wish him all the best and hope he does well up there. Except when he plays his former club of course At least we got a very good price for him, considering he's 28 years old.
