I am not hugely convinced by all the predictions - I think we will miss XA. I think the main challengers are all, on paper, weaker than before. Not sure they will be though: MU through losing their huge source of goals (Owen WILL score - apparently best goals/shots ratio in league last year!); Chelsea through age, ANC and possible unfamiliarity (I think Ancelotti will get the best out of his older players - have you seen the Milan Lab!!!??) ; Arse through losing experience (but also losing some divisiveness too).
It is debateable as to whether our squad has got weaker though. Alonso is a big loss - his replacement is not ready for a few weeks and plays in a different way. Liverpool will have to change as I do not think we have anyone that can enable play in the way that Xabi did. I dunno how Aquilani will be but I am 100% that Lucas will be better than he has been - and he has actually been pretty good since he had his hair cut! Lucas has, quietly but effectively, been involved in some big big games and not been found wanting - like a few of our players, he has been weaker in mid-level games. Our defence is stronger if you just consider personnel - Carra is our oldest player in the squad and, at 31, is not old. Others are expected to be better with time. Johnson, on face value, is an upgrade.
Our attack is not weaker, and might be stronger - young players with a bit more time and experience. N'Gog scored one goal less than Tevez last season iirc.

On the flip side, keep them fit all season and we'll win it IMO. They are now the two best players in the league (apart from Ryan Giggs obviously, he's had a great career you know...).

Kuyt, Riera and Torres all bagged a goal tonight. Good lads.

As long as Johnson doesn't play like he did tonight we'll be fine!

Wasn't he having a 'mare from one of our other players?

Johnson was at fault (imho) for the second Atletico goal - not convnced he candefend as part of a unit. Everytime I see him dealing with attackers cutting in, he does not seem to comprehend that you should hand over the defence to the CBs and then still cover your flank.
Usually, as a full back, your job is simply to stop people getting behind you - let the centre backs deal with it!

Back on Liverpool generally, Skrtel played the other day.

As a combination, Gerrard and Torres are frightening - each can individually do something but they can both understand the other's runs and so they link so well. Torres has set up Gerrard plenty of times - not often noted. I think Rooney and Gerrard are similar for England in terms of seeing what each of them want to do.

Have to say Spurs deserve there lead at HT and you should count yourselves lucky its only 1-0 at HT as R.Keane could have had a hatrick already.

Have to say Liverpool have been realy poor first half but it is only HT and 1-0 is never a safe score.

We've been ****. Look rusty. Funny how we suddenly look like our old selves again after going 1 down. Glimpses of intent to get goal scoring willys out. Let's hope they get a right ol semi-on for the second half. Lucas has been our best player. Speaks volumes

Can't say I've felt confident at any point about this game since the fixtures dropped. Tough game. Would of preferred Birmingham or Hull at home like.

You're not the only one. I really would like Lord Triesman & Richard Scudamore to explain to me just how the Premier League Fixtures are decided.

Seven years since our last opening day fixture at Anfield is an utter disgrace.

Oh cat piss. Credit to Tottenham. Pressured us really well. Maybe we should of had enough pen there near the end (Voronin), but overall, we didn't really look threatening.

Also, I really think Benayoun should be an automatic starter!

Babel shouldn't be starting any games he looks like a rabbit in the headlights whenever he gets the ball.

God only knows why Benayoun isn't in your starting eleven, seriously.

For the record though, you should have had another penalty.

Although, I have to agree...thats a really weak bench, Benayoun aside. Not a single game changer.
