Actually, I think it is the poor ending - both storywise and gameplay which leaves a sour taste... I take back ...most... of what I said - I've just been on Legendary and spent a good couple of hours trying to cut through the hordes of Elites in the 2nd hangar in level one... finally managed it, phew... reminded me of boarding the T&R in Halo 1, only that took me like a full day on Legendary.
Onto the next section and phew that slowed me down, thinking I was all ace until I swapped my plasma pistol/rifle combo for plasma pistol/SMG; four Elites mowed down.
Although... I do think that was wee too hard... I mean, I'm still on the first level... I'm starting to dread crawling through the next, like 14.5 levels now... how'ma gunna get past those Brutes on Lej?
Overall, I think the story seems very disjointed, and having seen the making of, it seems like Jo Staten was (a) cut short with time and (b) optimistic about how much character he put into the game... Miranda Keyes was nothing but a name to me, no personality allowed to flourish... no Master Chief-Cortana moments (even like the trailers), and telling 'it' from the Covenant side was a mistake... I think a lot of people had pondered over what the Covenant were really like, and so showing it was a mistake as it removed a lot of their mystery (and perhaps our own private conceptions of why, who, what).
Bottom line, after initial diappointment: gameplay good - bigger and badder and MORE (if a little over-complicated), storyline bad. Ending worse.
