When attempting to do some of those same techniques in practice, I too was met with frustration, especially for the Sky Dance w/ AR because I ALWAYS jumped too high!!! lol, oh the memories... anway, so thats when I began to think about how best to change the controls, for a few days too, and I came up with a radically different, but amazing configuration. The only thing is that its somewhat different when playing Vergil and Dante, but nevertheless, it allows, IMO, a player to utilize either character to their full potential. My controls are posted below, and bolded and italized the buttons which are different between Vergil and Dante.
Command======Default=====Dante====Vergil
Swap Guns=======L2========X====== Circle
Devil Trigger=====L1======= L2 =======L2
Swap Devil Arms ==R2 ======Circle===== Circle
Lock-on =========R1======= R1======= R1
Attack ========Triangle ====Triangle ====Triangle
Shoot =========Square ====Square===== L1
Jump ===========X========R2======= R2
Style ==========Circle====== L1======== X
Cheers man. For Dante, style has been changed to L1 to aid in Aerial Combos and jump cancelling, and to make buffering any Style commands (Artermis' dispersion shot for instance) easier. R2 has been changed to jump to help with rolling maneuvers, and aerial jump cancells. I change the swap weapon and gun commands so that they're close to their respected Attack/fire buttons.
As you notinced, Vergil is slightly different. By changing Shoot to L1, I am able to maximize control over how the Spiral Swords are used, which works amazing well when using triangle to attack, (since I can only mash 1 button at a time with my thumb), so i can use my left hand to continously fire the swords at all times. The weapon switching has been moved around to compliment Vergil's triple weapon fighting style. Because it works life a wheel, Circle going clockwise, square going counter-clockwise, I can attack with...say Yamatto, and I know Square will yield Force Edge, and Circle Beowulf, and the buttons are still in close proximity, so I can swap either way with a slight slide of my thumb in the respected direction. Basically, the 4 buttons would look like this...
∆ [Attack]
Sq. [← Swap] О [Swap →]
X [Style]
THe only problem with this setup is that when Buffering either Yamatto's Juggernaut Cut, or Force Edge's Round Trip, you can use Dark Slayer to move around and not lose your charge. This setup makes it hard to do this because you have to hold down triangle and push X at the bottom wth the same hand, left hand occupied w/ direction. Fortunatley, I have large hands, so I can slide my thumb in between square and circle and hit X, but whether or not that may be a problem for you or anyone else reading this for that matter, is difficult to say.
Anyway, hope this is helpful, and trust me, if your used to the default controls, this may take some getting used to. And alternating between the characters may also be somewhat difficult as well, but believe me when I tell you that once you get the hang of it, you wont even notice the difference between characters. I can alternate between the two, swap the controls (3 buttons, takes less than 10 secs) and enter a game. And becuase Vergil's weapon changing, style, and shooting is nothing like Dante's, I dont think that alternating between the two is all that difficult, just takes some getting used to.
