But your focus is combat. RE4 is combat-based whereas Zelda is based around the adventuring and dungeon puzzles. You're right that it didn't deliver a combat challenge. The normal enemies were usually pretty dull and the boss combat was easy once figured out.
But, personally, I feel the game delivered where it counts in a Zelda game. The dungeons weren't all a breeze. I think they were easier for those us very familiar with Zelda games as the main style of puzzles hasn't changed but still no walkover.

Does anyone else think the combat has actually been significantly dumbed-down from OoT?
Yes, WW and Twighlight Princess both have more attack moves than OoT... but in the process of adding stuff, it seems a lot of the subtlety has been lost.
The N64 Zeldas had a simple but rigorous system: essentially just four types of sword slash (horizontal, vertical, diagonal and jab), three types of dodge (sidejump, roll, backflip), a slow-but-powerful 'big hitter', and a block.
It's not complicated, however, the game would actually ask you to deploy these moves intelligently.
Remember the Stalfos and Iron Knuckle fights in OoT? They actually required you to use all the moves at your disposal to get past the enemy's defenses.
I'm playing TP on the Wii, and in contrast it doesn't even seem to have a block button.Just wade in, waggle the controllers and watch the enemies fall over. I really hope they bring back some subtlety to the combat in the next game.

I really fail to see how anyone could rate Wind Waker over Twilight Princess. Especially seen as the main criticisms that people have of TP are its easyness and The "Obviousness" of its dungeons (prob due to Zelda over familiarity).
Don't get me wrong...WW is one of the most beautiful games i've played, I love the art style and I really wish they had continued with it for Twilight Princess. But the game Is the slimmest, and dullest Zelda game by a long way. It by far the easiest Zelda and Each of its 5 dungeons offer almost zero challenge and don't really engage that much, It lacks the "What the **** do I do now?" Zelda moments that turn into joy when they are inevitably solved. TP had these moments in Spades. The Dungeon design is possibly the best I have encountered in any Zelda game (and i've finished all Zelda's from lttp onwards). It's wonderful, It's just Zelda....again.
The story has been done better....I prefer the atmosphere and story of WW a lot more than TP. WW has the wonderful asthetics...but TP has the content.

IMO the relative lack of challenge is a good thing as I hate games with contrived boss battles that exist just for the sake of it. Gaming time is precious to me and particularly with a 60+ hour game like TP.
If I got stuck on a particular boss, I would more than likely give up, never to return. I have found TP pretty easy going so far which further pulls me into the game, as I know that I am able to complete it.Last edited by Richard.John; 10-01-2007, 02:52.

I think the
magic bar
was taken out. Looks like Nintendo scrapped the idea of using any kind of
magical items.
I've just gathered all of the
mirror shards
but i know im close to finishing, so last night i was doing some of the side quests.
Managed to get the
frog lure by doing the minigame and the sinking lure from the lake. I also caught all of the fish in the lake. I managed to open the shop in hyrule castle that sells the magic armour, but i didnt have enough rupees - so i went to the cave of ordeals to try and earn some bunce
I LOVE THIS GAME - there is so much to do!

He's just been in my room for an hour talking about what he did last night. He got stuck trying to get the green book down from shelf so went on a heart piece expedition instead. He also reckons he's 1/3 of the way through the game as he's got the first of three pendants. Can't wait for him to get the Master Sword.

As for the green book, tell him there's no need to rush into getting it. Maybe he'll get the hint..?
LttP is the foundation of most modern Zeldas and has the most dungeons of any Zelda game (11), so it's a must for any formative player to have gone through at least in their lives.Lie with passion and be forever damned...
