Yeah I think answering the phonecalls was my favourite part of the game.

My US copy arrived today and I've been purposely ignoring this thread and previews etc so I could approach the game without preconceptions. I have to say I'm glad I did, coz it's TeH Awesome ^_^
The combat is really great fun and is probably the first example I've seen of a game mechanic that would work with conventional controls but is just so much more fun using the Wii controllers. It works so well because all the important functions like attacks and dodging are done by conventional button-pushing - which leaves nothing to chance as motion controls so often do - but then you get the added bonus of using the motion controls to do finishing moves. Like the shield-butting in Twilight Princess, the physical motion and its tangible effect on your body draws you in just that little bit further. The genius is in having placed the motion control moments at the climax of each encounter - delivering the coup-de-grace is intensely satisfying.
The 'free-roaming' driving bits are admittedly pants however, though I don't think for a moment that they're intended as a substantial part of the game. There's plenty of stuff to search for so I'm not really fussed how it looks.
Both the barely functional city and the general style of the game remind me quite a lot of God Hand ATM, and of course that's a very good thing. It's a game that revels in being a videogame, and having as much fun as it can.
Re the ZOMG CENSORSHIP OMFG non-issue, I think Suda's comments in the Eurogamer interview was probably more good PR and salesmanship than a heartfelt opinion. Think about it. Euro gamers generally feel like they're missing out or getting shafted, so trying to give the impression that their non-bloody version is somehow 'better' - more refined, shall we say - is just pandering and flattery to encourage people to buy out of sentiment.

Dazzyman
I read on one preview by him that the JPN/euro version he considered the proper version and they had to alter it for the USA in gamplay (as the other version because they go poof its actually quicker) to me it just sounded like marketing crap that he didnt really want to say yea they went overboard with the censorship. Im buying this on PAL BUT if I really like it I will end up importing another Wii later in the year with it as Im already sick of delays on Wii stuff as Im heavily using my machine now.

I reckon the game was originally made as the violent version. Many of the cut scenes for boss endings don't make sense in the Japanese version, like someone's head being blown up with a grenade (but then their head is still intact) and another one with a guy being cinematically sliced in half (except that he doesn't get split). Also there are guys in the background of cutscenes cleaning up the blood, when there is no blood to clean up!

Only spent a few hours in Santa Destroy.
I absolutely love the art styling, bat-**** crazy storyline, over the top dessert-name-super-move shouting, copious amounts of claret flowing.
What seems to grow on me more is the combat...
It just seems a tad laborious at the moment, and i'm hoping there's more to it later. Though no doubt when i get more lucha libre wrestling moves.
The outside GTA freeroaming is a bit gash though.
What brought a smile to my face was hearing 'Heavenly Star' by Genki Rockets when you go to see Naomi or Area 51 ^o^Last edited by jimtendo; 27-01-2008, 20:59.

I love this game....
Onto the third assassination now and love almost every thing about it (the GTA stuff is quite rubbish but as mentioned....its almost like you could imagine it was deliberately designed to be rubbish)
so im fighting
that Shinobu girl
and getting my ass kicked...
There is one element of the fighting system I can't get down 100% and that is evading moves.
And i don't mean just using the D-pad....there seems to be something else....
It's when the screen goes black and everything slows down...like I have timed it correctly and dodged a move...rather than using the Dpad.....when this occurs I *think I'm holding the stick either left/right and hit an attack button.
I don't quite get it..and can't find any mention of it anywhere.....anyone got any ideas?
....So far the game is brilliant.....top tier Wii game along with SMG, Zelda & RE4.

I also found it helped to evade, get in a couple of sword attacks and then stun her with a B button attack so you can pull a wrestling move on her, as it takes more energy and there's less risk of her dodging so early into the combo. IT also helps to keep your sword charged up.

Why did you buy it?
Had you not even seen a single trailer/screenshot?
I often have a slight clue about a game before I buy one.
It looks awesome, Real Otaku fanboy wet dream, Has fantastic art and a great sense of humour throughout. It's idiosyncratic, tongue in cheek videogame pastiche. And I LOVE IT.
Contender for GOTY.
And thats not even mentioning the fantastic combat mechanic, the meat of the game.

I usually buy games that look interesting and quite like Goichi Suda's stuff. This just seems rather dull to play at the moment. Technically, it's also seems rather sloppy. Just not doing anything for me right now, sorry.Last edited by Steve; 02-02-2008, 15:00.

No More Heroes began life on 360, says developer
Suda51 admits upcoming Wii action hit was originally designed for Microsoft console
Grasshopper founder Suda51 has told MCV that he first planned for Rising Star’s No More Heroes to be an Xbox 360 title.
Speaking exclusively in the No More Heroes Recommended Extra magazine given away free in this weeks’s MCV magazine, Suda51 said:
“Originally, I’d wanted to make this game for Xbox 360, actually. [Marvelous Interactive boss] Wada-san had information about the new Wii and how the new controller would work before it came out, so that’s why he thought I should produce the game on that format.
“At the time, I didn’t really understand why, but after seeing and understanding how it works, I think it was a good choice and the controller works really well with the game.”
