Surely you don't need to tranq both forms, only the beauty part, I thought you could kill the normal beast form with any weapon you wanted? pretty sure anyway

It's only an alert if the word "ALERT" comes up at the top of the screen, and you get the classic alarm noise - you know the one.Enemies will display an exclamation mark when startled - usually when they see you, hear some evidence you're there, have you brush past them, so on. They only go on to an alert if they then notice you in their direct line of sight - it all seems to depend on a mix of where you/they are, distance, camo rating, shadows, so on.
For example, the militia will display an "!" when they first see you. If you've been helping them, they then just go on to say "Oh, it's you" or any one of their stock quotes. Shoot an enemy at long distance with the tranq pistol and if you don't get a perfect headshot they'll display an "!" - however, if they can't then see right to you, the most they'll do is go into caution, not alert.
EDIT: Reading your question a little slower (very tired, sorry <_< ) if I only just managed to subdue an enemy, heard "the noise" but didn't see or wasn't sure if I'd seen a timer - or only saw "ALERT" I restarted anyway just to be sure.
EDIT AGAIN: And the only tranquiliser sniper rifle is the Mosin Nagant. But you can't get a silencer/suppressor for it, so you need to be careful about firing it.Last edited by Eight Rooks; 27-06-2008, 17:59.

Dazzyman
Ive just finished it in last 10mins and Im laid here with the feeling of dumb found really. I feel abit shell shocked like when Ive watched a new found epic film I adore for the first time. Yes their are gripes which I will get out the way first. Game time said I think 14 or 15hours with only one continue (you can add at the very least 10hours to that as from Act 2 I kept restarting everytime I died and I died alot for ages lol) but the actual gamplay is probably 4-5hours. I guess the only other thing I could find was Octacon made me cringe on one scene but thats it.
Their minor though because this to me I guess is the most important milestone in gaming. Its the first time for me Ive seen and played a game and got the exact same gutwrenching feelings of near enough every emotion that I would get with watching a film. Ive had the odd one with a game but this was just a rollercoaster ride from start to finish. I gave a damn about all the characters and the plot and tonight I was sat on edge of the bed for 20mins totally engrossed on the enfolding story at the start of the last act. Yes it could be trimmed right down and the story is abit whacky but I totally forgot I was playing a game for alot of it as I was 100% immersed in the experience, it wasnt as if I was playing abit now and again and getting fed up I was laid in bed for 6days being part of a film. Even after finishing it I know I will reach for this game over and over. Even the epilogue at the end (just over 60mins not 90!) whizzed by so much so I though that was the prelude to it and I was left wanting another cutscene! The final fight was breathtaking as was the entire last part leading up to it it just had everything I could want.
Ive seen remarks (I still say Cliffy B one is out of context) regarding it being a interactive experience and it is but its the best one Ive ever played. We need games like this to break the mould and make gaming grow up. Why cant we have a proper story in a game with proper voice acting and tear jerking music because its a game. MGS4 has shown we can have both the media of film and gaming in one.
I for one commend Hideo and thank him for the best experience in gaming Ive had in my 35yrs
Definetly a 10/10

If anyone's still wondering how
Psycho Mantis
reacts to a Sixaxis there's a video of it in here. There are spoilers in that article for anyone who hasn't finished the game.
I laughed at the
"no more massages for you, then"

Totally agree Dazzyman, it’s definitely another step up in the way of story telling.
All the way through I was thinking ‘ when is Snake going to turn things around, when is he going to get younger, healthier’ then the titles roll and it gets even worse.
In some ways I’m quite annoyed as I feel Snake had a few more games left in him, but it’s clearly something Kojima wanted to do since the first game - damn him!
Anyway, aside from the epic story, did anyone else find the boss battles a bit of a let down ? Gameplay wise they were great but the bosses themselves had no personality - which is something I found really noticeable having just played through Snake Eater.

Just finished this, really enjoyed it. Hated it at first, but soon got sucked in by the gameplay and storyline. Never played any of the other MGS games, now looking to try them out so I can fill in some of the back-story for myself.
The ending was pants and overly long, and felt that the final half wasnt as well done as the first. But still, thoroughly entertaining and I wouldnt complain, nor be surprised, if this was recognised as the GOTY.

Overall, though, I agree that the boss battles were kind of disappointing. The only ones that I really liked were
Raging Raven and Crying Wolf
, and the latter one just didn't compare that favourably to MGS3's epic
sniper battle
. It would have been better without the
FROGs running around
during the fight.
I loved the end battle against
Ocelot
, but that was as much a set piece as it was a boss battle.

Slightly miffed to find out that once again Naomi has lost her original accent... in the original she was very english and sounded like a bit of a toff... in Twin Snakes and MGS4 she's very american.
Also what's up with Meryl being referred to as Campbell's daughter? She was his niece in the first game! If MGS4 is supposed to tie all the stories together nicely then I wish they'd got the basic continuity right :/
