I was a bit disappointed with Naomi's accent too. Actually the accent is a small thing but it's a symptom of a slightly bigger issue with me - the watering down of the character in general. Her artwork in MGS1 is very distinctive, she has the accent and history that builds her personality and background - the British Indian (I think), she even makes reference to her skin colour. In MGS4, she's a generic, FF: Spirits Within-like American female. Same with Mei-Ling to a large extent. Even Meryl, who hadn't got the accent to lose, has lost a huge amount of her sassiness and power.
Watered down characters.
And I can't remember where the daughter thing came from either.

Clearly 'no place for Hideo'
I jus completed it last weekend, and im sad now cos i dont have it to look forward to playing when i get home from work. Sigh.............
Great game though, im totally baffled by the story, even though ive played all the series lol....... MGS2 is still my fave, with this being a very close second!
Ive got some many questions.......... sigh..........
I only jus figured out that when you start the game and them adverts come on you can cycle through the channel like a tv set lol......... i think i must be the only one who didnt know this till i accidentaly moved the annalogue stick.

I think Meryl is actually sassier in MGS4. She's one of the few characters which seems to have actually changed slightly - she's less whiny and wimpish (read the bathroom, sniper, 'oh Snake, thinking of you saved me from the torture' scenes in the original MGS).
I don't like what they did to Mei Ling though. Although it's the same actress she sounds nothing like she did in MGS1 (and briefly in MGS2). That and her character model has clearly been westernised.
I think one criticism you can level is that both of the more interesting female characters from MGS1 (which was hardly an unsexist game) have been even more sexualised in MGS4. Naomi looks like a supermodel who gets Eva side-boob treatment and a fixation on her stockings, and Meryl has to
have a white wedding to be with her 'saviour' Akiba.

Was I the only one who thought...
when Akiba takes his hood off and Meryl kisses him that he looked like a young Snake??? I totally thought this was gonna be part of the story and he was Snakes son or something as they pure lingered on his face at that point but it turned out to be of no significance because he is jsut the faceless lad from MGS1
... WTF!!

He's in MGS2 as well and I think
his dad is in MGS3
, so it was just Kojima's way of giving a minor character a bigger role. In the lead up to release I thought it was going to be a clone of Raiden (or something) behind the mask.
Perhaps they'll have a spin-off bowel rhythm game in the future. :P

Yeah, I agree with your take on the women, Concept. Well, aside from the Meryl MGS1/4 thing. I remember her being very strong in MGS1, though admittedly it's been a long time (I'll find out in Replay!). I was happy to see that Meryl was still ripped though. I love that in a woman.
But on their roles and the sexism, as much as I loved Naomi's sideboob and without it I would have hated this game more as I would have had nothing to look for during the cut scenes, I agree.
And, yeah, Mardigan, I thought the exact same as you. At the very least I thought
they were setting him up to be the next hero character, in spite of him crapping himself earlier in the game.

is his dad
in MGS3?
I really thought he was gonna have a more significant part in the finale with him being immune to the nanomachine madness then it would turn out he was tied to Snake somehow and I thought that was really cool, but once again, Kojima went a way that only he could go with it

The bit where Naked Snake is in prison, the guard there that chats to him (and has bowel problems).

Metal Gear Solid 4 is a sexy game. It's got it all — sexy posing, sexy stone penis grabbing, sexy skin-tight outfits and sexy nard punching. At the recent MGS4 signing session in Tokyo's Shinjuku, Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima joked that it sure seems like, with what Snake's ass-clenched sneaking suit and the Beauty…
It says the original idea was to have the B+B's naked in their beauty form, awesome. All were captured naked too, ooer.
