Yes, DT, I am talking about the single races against the enemy crafts - thanks for the tips, I'll give them a whirl tonight But what do you mean by 'absorb what you can' - I know what that means, but not in the context of Wipeout....sorry, still a bit of a n00b at this! Do you just mean learn what I can from the time trials etc? And as for getting shield pick-ups, there's no way to influence this is there so I guess if I get an attack weapon, fire it off asap so I can hopefully pick a shield at the next pick-up?

The two main pieces of advice I could give is to first practice the track in time trial for a bit in the same craft and speed class so you are in the best position to get an early lead and then manage your pickups. Don't worry so much about your attack weapons. Make sure you absorb what you can to keep your shields up - that will remove one worry from the race.

Your most valuable pickup is the shield. Not only does it save your energy, but it means you won't lose time by getting hit with something. If you hang on to a weapon you don't really need as you go over a weapons pad, you've missed out on a chance to get a shield.

So absorb what you can and keep trying for a shield. Unless you get a quake, which has to be the greatest weapon for turning the tides in a race. As soon as you get one of those, let it fly and try to take the lead.

The quicker you get a lead, the more likely it is you will win the race. If you're in front, you don't have mines or bombs to contend with and can race it like a time trial, not a battle.

If you press the circle button (I think), you will absorb whatever pickup you have - that means you lose the weapon but gain some extra shield energy as a result. It's a lifesaver and a very useful tactic in just finding the pickup you want.

And, yeah, there's no way to influence what pickup you get so maximise your chances by getting your slot clear before you pass one.

I think what he means to absorb - when you get a weapon that you dont want or just not usefull, absorb it ( press square to take the energy from that weapon to add to your shield ).. its certainly got me out of a few scrapes now and again.. and replaces the pit lane sections from older wipeouts...

opps - bit late to the party on that 1 ....

Thanks so much - I didn't know about that at all, very helpful indeed!

You mean CIRCLE right? SQUARE is fire, or have you customised your controls?

Circle is the default button for absorbing, yeah.

Absorb a lot of items and you'll get a trophy for that.

in the last few cups (single race/tournaments), you will need to absorb about 50% of your item to say alive!

Laid up ill on the coach yesterday and as result finally managed to win the tournament in Meltdown getting the last gold medal to clear campaign. Normally I restart a tournament if I don't come first in a race but this time after multiple rstarts on Sebenco Climb I got through the entire tournment then came 3rd on Sol 2 and thought, "good enough".

I still think it's a fantastic game overall but my last few days have highlighted that I don't think much of it as a racing game. For Time Trial, Speed Lap and Zone I love it. A great handling model where I feel I can keep improving and eeking out extra milliseconds off my times. But in Race that all goes out of the window.

I feel that if I am still stuck amongst the pack by the second lap it's 50/50 whether I will pull off a win or be resigned to constantly fighting my way out of 8th place. Too many times have I worked my up through the pack, close to first, then eat a couple of attacks in quick succession and find myself back in last place. Frustrating.

It's been a while since I've played a 'just one more go' game, but WIPEOUT HD has hit that spot dead centre!! You can lose hours, days, months or years even on this crazy racer.

It's just so demanding and if you lose a race by a few secs just because you get mullered on the last lap having fought your way to first place only to get relegated to last in a matter of seconds, it's not luzz-the-controller-across-the-room-time at all, it's feckin'-well-start-the-damn-race-again time!

Games like this are rare and this one should be celebrated for effortlessly including the 'just one more go' factor!

Argh, my hands are killing me! That's the last tournament done.. gave me three trophies in one shot - meltdown, campaign legend & livery liberation. Now I need to work on becoming actually skilled, rather than just moderately good and lucky. Until I can win those phantom class races every time I won't be happy!

I've also realised through playing online that I am absolutely hopeless at the reverse tracks. Got to try and master those too.

Congrats. That Phantom tournament was a pain.

At the moment I'm focussed on trying to get the Zone mode trophies. Zone is digital crack.

New personal best on Zone mode. Zone 50 on Anulpha Pass. Still need to become a lot better for the trophy for reaching Zone 75.

Anulpha Pass definitely seems like the best choice of track to get the Airbraker trophy. Had a go last night and managed to get to Zen on my first try so a bit of refinement in controlling the ship without using the analog stick and I think I can do it.
