Jesus man, you've hardly scratched the surface!

No, I know. I was just expecting a stronger opening, you understand; 'start as you mean to go on' and all that. I'm sure it picks up; was just wondering when.

Had me right from the start if I'm honest.

Done and done on hard, what a fantastic game from start to finish.

My only complaint is the total lack of emotional connection to any of the characters, which reduced any impact the (predictable) story might have had. And the ending was crap.

OK, so that's a few complaints. Basically, don't play this for the story - play it for the wonderful gameplay and incredible atmosphere, and to support quality new IP*.

            * -

Not that I'm suggesting we should see a Dead Space 2, the story really doesn't need it

have you heard about the easter egg with the chapter names? take each of the first letters, and put them together.

also, did the nicole jumpy bit make you jump?! do you reckon she was a necromorph, or his imagination?

                I'm actualy wondering

If shes actualy somthing else all together that they could use in a sequel.

                Would be intresting anyway.

The ending dosent relaly make sense otherwise either.

I had no idea about that Easter Egg as it happens, nice.

                  As for the ending,

it was a little too telegraphed to make me jump. More than anything I'm a little disappointed that it happened at all, I don't think it added anything of value to the story.

I'm not sure whether the signs with Nicole were meant to be subtle, but it was always blatantly obvious that something wasn't right. The almost monotone dialogue from her throughout the game (And the 'meeting' during the game which was devoid of any emotion at all) and the 'complete us' were, to me at least, very obvious. Particularly once there was a mention of a hive mind.

Same as Kendra and Hammond. Set up from the beginning that you were supposed to trust Kendra and suspect Hammond, obviously the roles would be reversed by the end of the game.

As I mentioned previously though, I don't think it detracts from the game. OK with a better story and characters it really might have elevated the game to genuine 'classic' status, but for me the gameplay is enough to put it up there with the best (Above Resi 4 for sure, but then I'm not that games biggest fan).

Completed it over the weekend. Took me a couple of chapters to get the 'feel' and for it to click but it is indeed a wonderful game, let down only by the poor audio diaries which, far from adding to the experience, detracted from it thanks to the overly contrived voice acting which lacked any sense of belief or emotion - though in truth the voice acting for the main characters wasn't great either.

But regardless, a wonderful game that conjures up an incredible atmosphere and plays like a cross between Bioshock and RE4 with a little Metroid thrown in for good measure. Special mention to the music too which was brilliant and, unlike most modern-day videogame scores, very distinctive and evocative.

Now to complete it on Impossible.

theres a huge thread on gamefaqs board about the ending.

was she in his imagination? a necromorph? something else? did he die? etc etc

maybe woulod have been less cheesy if they just showed a glimpse of her behind him all necro'd up and left it at that rather than the cheesey, youtube shock-video style?

yeah, that whole complete us thing was odd.

overall though, i loved it. just about everything was right. the sound and graphics were amazing... like the clanging metal noises far off. the particle effects of dust and blood splatter in zero-G. i loved some of the lighting effects too... where the lights run up and down a corridor, or the alarm / rotating lights.

the turret bits were gash though...

Yeah, the turret bits weren't great. The aiming felt too loose and made worse by the absence of any crosshairs.

I congratulate all those who bagged the 'Don't Get Cocky, Kid' (great reference to Star Wars) achievement that requires you complete the first turret section - the asteroid shower - with hull integrity higher than 50%. I somehow managed to get it but, bloody hell, it was hugely frustrating and not at all fun.

I've not actually played this yet (saving it for Xmas) but I have to say all of your comments are really making me look forward to it. They've all been almost universally positive - I think this will be the first game I get into post-Xmas.

Well, Dead Space is now completed. And what a ride ! Stunning game, never a dull moment, some great boss fights (last boss = Woah !!!), some terrific poop your pants moments (the end sequence in particular), sounds and looks fantastic......I can't say enough good things about it.

Made it to chapter 7 on Impossible mode now. The opening chapter with no weapon, suit or equipment upgrades was a right bitch but since reaching the store on chaper 2 it's been pretty smooth sailing and concentrating on maxing out the plasma cutter before anything else has paid off handsomely. Saying that, things have started getting more difficult again now and, as there are very few upgrades left to buy, I anticipate a tough ride to the finish.

Started this this morning. Very pleasant surprise! Technically it's excellent: both visuals and audio are first class.

Only downside is I had to turn it off after the first chapter - my nerves were shot! I think its going to be a play at the weekends only in the daytime type game
