The most densely populated area in Fallout 3 is down in the south-east, the D.C. ruins whereas the Wasteland is very sparse but locations can be found here and there.
Enjoy the experience mate.

I just finished the story.
Liberty Prime
was so cool
I've got a ton of saves throughout the whole thing, so I can go back to my one before the final mission and do any side quests later with good companions and armed to the teeth. I don't think I've even been further north than Paradise Falls and I've barely ventured into the southwest as well, so there's tons of stuff that I haven't seen.
In any case, I'll be coming back to it as soon as the DLC starts coming out. More than anything I'm interested to see how the third pack will let you continue after the ending, which is what they're implying, because
it seems quite final
. Either they're going to have to make it the canonical ending that
Lyons goes in
or they'll have to contrive something like
Fawkes pulling you out before the radiation becomes fatal
. Either way is going to mess things around or could even be impossible based on your decisions, so Bethesda's going to have to get creative.

You lose hours on this. Completed the Big Trouble in Big Town quest and now wandering through
Marigold Station
as part of the Those! quest. Whilst I was down there I found a recording of a deceased individual asking that anyone who finds it to collect a package with instructions on how to find the safe and key to obtain it.
Upon doing so I was approached by
a raider who demanded I hand it over. I tell him he can pay me for it but his response was not positive and he makes it clear he's going to take it from me. I don't give him the chance, draw my 10mm Submachine Gun and explode his head in a shower of bullets.
I'm not actually playing my character as a mass murderer and actually have good karma at the moment and will help people who I feel need helping, but I have a low tolerance of being told what to do.
Another NPC found this out after I'd been asking around various doctors regarding the Replicated Man quest.
She jumps me in the middle of nowhere ranting about what right I have to be sniffing around other people's affairs, androids have the right to life etc. I listen to what she has to say, I even take the item she asks me to hand to the androids owner to make him think the android is dead and she goes on her way. As she turns to make off, I gun her down too.
If she had been more amicable in how she approached me I'd have let her go, but you can't be all up in my face with attitude.
On the whole though, my decision to help the majority of people out is paying off.
Red in Big Town will now heal my wounds for free and when I left my Megaton House earlier a settle came up to me and gave me some ammo for my Hunter's Rifle

The Megaton woman
gives you a random small-value gift every morning. I think it's linked to having Very Good karma because after a little 'incident' where I inadvertently reduced my Karma she stopped seeing me, but started coming back once I had restored it. It might be linked in to disarming the bomb as well, not sure.
As for that guy you capped (don't read if you haven't started the Nuka Cola Challenge quest:
he's been hired by the mercenary who protects the Nuka-Cola girl. He tells you in no uncertain terms what he'd like to do with her, and if you ask her the right questions she tells this story of how he protected her from raiders. The leader of the raiders was called Lugnut - it's the same guy who he's hired to find the Naughty Nightwear. It seems the merc put him up to 'attacking' her so he could 'come to her rescue'

It's a random Megaton resident who'll do that if you save the town and have good karma. I've had a few different ones.
I went back to a save that I had in
Raven Rock
today because I'd missed a bobblehead, and now I'm continuing with the side quests after getting the main story back to a bit before the final mission. I finished it for the Achievement and to see the ending, but now this is going to be my primary save for playing the DLC and stuff in the future.
It was really my first time properly exploring, because pretty much everywhere else I'd been had been to do with the main quest, a couple of side missions aside. I did 'Those!', accidentally killing the
ant queen
because it attacked my companion, but I wasn't that bothered because it wasn't a negative karma thing. After that I set out towards the
RobCo Factory
, taking detours to new areas along the way, and somehow got into a massive battle with a couple of
Enclave
, one of those sentries with a gatling laser and a missile launcher, and a bloody Deathclaw. If I didn't have
Fawkes
with me I'd have been buggered.
Eventually I found Tenpenny Tower, which I'd heard about but found to be quite surprising - very
Land of the Dead
- so I'm going to do the quest pertaining to that while I'm in the area. I haven't even visited the area north of downtown DC - Paradise Falls is pretty much the only place I've been north of Arefu - so I'm interested to see what a bit of exploring up there will find, considering how much I found in one walk across the southeast.

Currently working on the quest where you need to find
Vault 92 to get the Violin for Agatha
. Just managed to identify the locations of the various vaults via the
Vault-Tec HQ
. Thankfully I've been scavenging any Lunchboxes and Sensor Modules that I've come across and been making Bottlecap Mines. Very powerful and made short work of the
Motherbrain
2 things bugging me at the moment though. The first is I fought my way through an army of Super Mutants including a
Behemoth
to make it to the GNR Building but when I got there the door was locked with no evident sign of a key or other way in and considering getting there involved a number of journeys through the metro system I was a little pissed off. This confused me as this was supposed to be my destination in tracking my father so if I hadn't have gotten the information I needed already from
Rivet City
I think I'd have been stuffed.
Secondly is the Broken Bow near Rivet City. Door seems to need 100 Lockpick skill which I doubt I'll ever have and again no sign of a key anywhere. Need entry to there for a couple of quests too.

Keep looking, you don't need 100 lockpick or a key
