Been playing all morning. I posted my initial impressions - created a Half Life 2 first play thread. But it's been deleted...? Bizarre.
Anyways. the game is indeed very nice. Graphically good but aside from the water hasn't blown me away. Nice textures and animations of course.
Atmospheric certainly, they've very nicely captured the feel of (how I imagine) a police state would be.
One thing I did notice, it's very easy. I have it set to hard mode and I've only died a couple of times when some guards caught me off guard.
Love those little spinning blade flying robot things. Very nice idea.

Oh man... This is amazingly awesome. When I can find my words again I'll start stripping down why I think this game works so well...
But wow. Hats off to Valve. In my opinion, up to now it's living up to the hype. (I'm up to Water Hazard, although I spent far too much time playing about with the physics before then).
The opening area of the game reminded me of Super Mario 64's castle gardenat the beginning. I was just messing about ages inside it fiddling about with things.

Regarding performance, I imagine it will run well on a lower end PC.
My system really struggled with Doom 3 and Far Cry (with high detail). Half Life 2 screams along, until it gets to some water when it can chug a little. (although I do have full reflections turned on).
I'm running it at 1600x1200 with 4x anisotropic and no anti-aliasing. All detail and texture options on high. Frame rate is around the 40-50fps mark mostly. With water on screen it's more like 20fps.
Specs - P4 3ghz, 1gb RAM, Radeon 9800 Pro 256mb.

Although not wanting to drag this thread into technically minded discussions too much, I'm running it fine at 1280x1024, everything high, AA x6, AFx8.
The only problem I have with the game is the odd sound stutter when a new area is loaded, where there's a one second loop. That's it really.
Apart from that, the technical problems I had in some cases with CS: Source appear to have been ironed out in this release, or not translated over (thankfully).

Holy **** guys, this game rocks.
I'm up to the Water buggy part with the Helicopter flying overhead beating your ass down and I'm finding it quite difficult on Normal.
Graphics, sound, the whole package is the best thing ever. Which is great, seeing as I've been playing Halo 2 the last week, which is PATHETIC compared to this.
