I bought a laptop about 18 months ago because I vowed never to get back into PC gaming again (the format was in a mess). Then BAM, Far Cry, Unreal 2004, Doom 3 and then....Half Life 2 was announced.
How can I justify spending the ?700-odd pounds to run the game when I already own a laptop I bought for over a grand less than two years ago? For christ sake my laptop doesn't even run the 3d screensaver that comes with Windows! But not to worry, I'm not getting back into PC gaming!
Pfft :/
Sucks to be me.

Just got this and I'm not really sure about it yet.
It started well - just got off the train at the beginning and was having a great time chucking stuff over a fence at a guard - every time I hit him, he'd fire up his stun thing and run at me but then couldn't get through the gate so would wander off again - not great AI but funny for a while. There's been a few of the usual HL scripted sequences that are quite cool but nothing new.
There isn't really anything new though - its just a standard PC FPS with decent graphics, odd physics (its great that loads of stuff interact with each other but they definitely display strange behaviour) and a HL setting. The puzzles which require some use of the physics are just a bit frustrating due to things randomly bouncing off each other. I managed to build a huge tower of stuff at one point to get to an area that guards had been shooting down on me from but it wouldn't let me jump the last couple of centimetres to get there - its all very well allowing you to do crazy stuff with things but theres little point if its so linear - hopefullt this will improve later on.
Currently I have just reached the first headcrab moment (not the one which screws up the teleport) and I just had to stop - it was stupid, I'm not a big fan of head crabs anyway but them spawning all round you just did my head in - its not even slightly fun.
I'm going to keep playing and will probably complete it unless it goes too alieny but Far Cry is still my favourite FPS of the current gen so far (and Quake 2 is still the greatest ever).

Anyone wondering about system specs i`m running it on a athlon 2200xp, geforce FX5700 ultra, 768mb ram with everything on high except textures which i put on medium cause it kept making the game stutter and runs great at 1024x768. Very impressed with it upto yet and am even more happy no ninja pc is required to run it at high detail either

It's an athlon 2000 with half a gig of ram and oodles of hdd space, yet it just cannot do graphics to save it's life. Framerate problem in windows for Christ sake! But anyway, I can run Word and Excel without any problem at all, which is the main thing.
*sob*
But anyway, back to HL2.

I think you need to improve your sales pitch
But yes, HL2. The evil little git is just sitting there on my desk in front of me, *taunting* me that I can't play it for another hour and a half.
Sounds encouraging about the performance/ specs though. Shame my crappy monitor can't do more than 1024x768. Will have to try wee bit of AA, see how much of a drag-factor it is on the framerate.
