csuzw, I agreed Q2 is my favourite single player FPS of all time, 16 shades of brown

Like some of you others, my laptop is not cut out for 3D gaming either and I do wonder how the lappy's with build in ATI 3D chips etc cope with this and Doom 3 ....

Seriously though, it isn't funny if its more than a 5 minute thing which it was for me. Lets hope they sort it out ASAP otherwise no one will be seeing the funny side.
Well, I read it in my horrorscope.

Stupid Valve. If Mystic Megpants could see this coming, how could they have not? Berks.

Has anyone tried it since the 2pm announcement?

Inertia - Strangely, the sound/load bug seems to have dissipated now that I've loaded up a number of my save files and have a large variety of quick saves stored. I don't know why that is, but I'm not complaining.

Jesus, this game is good. I mean I was expecting it to be excellent, but perhaps not this far up the ladder.

Minor spoiler (I'm still on Ravenholm): It was awesome when you get to the new black mesa complex, and hook up with all the fresh characters, before being introduced to the gravity gun. I was playing catch and basketball with Dog for ages, and damn, then you get introoduced to ravenholm and the physics and level design take on a whole new lease of life, even compared to before.

Damn... It's just so. A can't place my finger on it... I doubt I'll play a game like this again the current-generation.

The atmospheric variation in themes and styles is blisteringly diverse. Yet it all fluidly melds together. Whereas Halo 2 was fragmented in a sense - Go from one wildly different planet to the next, Half-Life 2, although featurning an expansive location set up to now feels just as progressive as the original. After seeing the binks I thought the narrative was going to jump around with Gordon being knocked out or something like that in getting from place to place... But it's so fluid, continous and instaneous. Like Half-Life, although there are different locations, they don't feel like levels.

They feel as part of the same single adventure.

Unlike Half-Life, you really do feel a sense of movement and momentum with this. Whereas before you were more or less rooted within black mesa, here's there's much more the grasp and sense of a journey. Of traversing a living, breathing and importantly alive landscape.

        Utterly fantastic.

Yeah that Ravenholm bit is ace. I've been spending ages working out new and ever more fun ways to kill things since hitting that point

I have a laptop (which I'm actually trying to sell) that has a desktop p4 2.6ghz, 512mb RAM, 64mb ATi Radeon 9600 mobility, 60gb hdd and dvd rewriter. I have played Far Cry with everything turned on and it runs fine. I haven't tried Doom 3 or HL2 on it but I'm sure they would run perfectly fine.

The most annoying copy protection I ever came acroos was Settlers 3 - it was really hard to tell whether you were OK until you were a little way into a game as if it detected an "illegal" CD, you could play but trees wouldn't grow and iron mines produced pigs! I only ever managed to get to lvl 3 due to these problems and despite multiple patches (20 odd I think) it was never fixed - eventually Bluebyte just banned me from their forums .

Anyway back on HL2 - the Steam forums seem to be down so I can't look for answers to my problem there - is the official HL2 forums there or somewhere else and if elsewhere, where?

popular HL & HL2 forums here may have an answer ?

interesting to hear what you say about the Mobility chip being "good" ta.

Anyone got any ideas on the 5.1 sound thing ?

I can't get it to work at all ?! Anyone else having the same problem ?

                      Thanks.

I use some modded standard Radeon drivers for the card which I think help a lot. The mobility drivers are always way behind the standard ones

I will after I've finished the game Mr. Firsty. At the moment I'm too busy enjoying it.

Right... I've had my coffee break. Time to dive back in. See you all in a few hours time.

So how does one install it somewhere other than C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam ?

                              I don't want it there.
